O.K. Computer, allow me to give you one that has plagued these very boards for ages. Surely no software would be able to accurately gauge no other than Mr. Intangibles, Jonathan Toews.

What is being covered in this thread is impossible to achieve at HFboards: Near perfect objectivity. I would say Bobby Ryan is very accurately rated here though.

I shall use the most scientific means of hockey analysis ever devised:

EPJX/pound, weighted against a grade of all other players.

It is very simple.

1. Calculate a player's total Essence of Per Johan Axelsson.
2. Divide that by his total weight, leaving us with EPJX/pound
3. High level, Base 11 mathematics. (I can't recreate it here on HFboards, as that I don't know how to express Samsonovian non-integers in vBulletin.)
4. Weigh the outcome of this score against other players in the league.

Final score: (Out of a weighted scale 1-37)...

31.00700051

Very respectable.

from a strict ranking point of view that may be true but people tend to overrate the gap between him and others

i'd say Tim Thomas is better from a strict "right now" point of view anyways, even ignoring the whole injury thing

plus there's the whole injury thing

I'd say a guy like Nik Lidstrom or even Pavel Datsyuk is pretty "accurately" rated, based on the fact that regardless of who you cheer for, you probably have a healthy respect for these guys and what they're capable of. Red Wings fans don't have to overrate them because they truly are top-of-the-top tier players in their positions, and fans of other teams tend to agree.

Linus Omark's classlessness is perfectly rated.

Even Stamkos knows he's classless, and that it's never right to spin-o-rama

Henrik Lundqvist. He can only be underrated, but I've never seen anyone say that, yet.

Marty St. Louis is labeled as one of the best playmakers in the game that gives everything on every shift.

Which is correct.

From the Canucks I'll go with Malhotra, I think everyone considers him one of the better 3rd line centers, and one of the best in the faceoff circle.

Around the league I'd go with Semin. I don't think it matters if you are a Washington fan or not, everyone seems to acknowledge that he is one of the most skilled players in the league, but just doesn't seem to care about winning most of the time. Which is a pretty fare rating.

What is the point of this?

The most accurately rated players (according to the cumulative of all the people you are putting this question out to) are the 90 forwards and 60 defenseman that everyone ranked in the poll section.

If for some reason you think that it isn't, then don't ask the same group of people and expect a different answer.

You are not going to get a more accurate assessment of how this group feels players should be rated than that poll.

This is beginning to get ridiculous. Then you have people who post the new poll "Kopitar vs Richards"... you know who is going to win... it says so in the damn list.

I'm not sure that you fully understand how important these discussions are. If HFboards is a boat, then scientifically objective debate is the gentle sea that carries it to enlightenment.
