Ice Quality

Will the ice improve at Staples without the Lakers and Clippers this season?

Less people = less humidity. Temperature is important, but high humidity is an ice killer. The less people that go in that building, the better the ice should be.

It would be weird not seeing someone fall every couple minutes in the corner by the home penalty box.

There MIGHT be a lockout in the NBA this year. What pro sport would be stupid enough to do that for a whole season, though...?

I came here to say exactly this. You honestly think AEG will let the Staples Center sit dark? That's a LOT of nights with no money flowing at Staples and LA Live that would be filled for both the Lakers and Clippers.

I just heard that it's almost guaranteed they will miss at least half the season.

generally, i agree with this notion. but--and to preface this, i'm certainly no events booking expert--supposing that AEG is hoping that the lakers and clippers get to play this year (which, considering the revenue they earn, they probably are), it's unlikely that they've booked events for the same dates as the potential NBA games. and if that's the case, there is a possibility that staples will go unused on at least some of those dates, since lots of acts coming to LA on what are supposed to be NBA nights at staples will probably have booked elsewhere in LA by the time the NBA season's fate is determined, if they haven't already. staples is huge, true, but there are plenty of other venues, like the greek theater, the forum, hollywood bowl, etc. that bands/events book as well.

that being said, it's probably unlikely that the ice quality will be all that much better next year, since the cost of keeping the ice maintained between kings games, regardless of what happens between them, is probably prohibitive.

The ice is always there from a couple weeks ago when they laid it down, until the Kings get eliminated from the playoffs or win it all. The basketball/football/concert/whatever floor is just laid on top of the ice.

Yeah and an event that would require a venue the size of Staples are typically booked more than a few months in advance. I doubt Billy Joel is going to call them tomorrow and see if they can book him a date in late October. They might plan some extra events toward the end of the season but even then, they'll probably holding out hope that the lockout is resolved until about December just like we were when the NHL lockout was going on. I'd be curious to hear if they do have a contingency in place but a place like that it is kinda hard. They have to keep the dates open in case the lockout is resolved.

Thx fior the information... didn't know that.

But thats good news. The facility manager can focus now on fixing the boards and glasses in the corner after Stoll warmed up a goalie

Absolutely.Should the NBA lockout continue , they probably wont have to have it covered until the grammys roll around next year.

As far as booking extra gigs, you probably couldn't book too many in advance with the possibility of a strike ending.Might be a month to month thing, and even with that, the ice would still be better.
