He is still on his ELC this season, this contract doesn't kick in till 2012/13

That's a solid signing now. It's a steal for the future.

Could have and should have asked for more. A 4 year deal for 36 million for examople would have taken him to UFA, then he could have really cashed in.

So ask for 300k more the Crosby and make it so the deal expires when he is a UFA? What motivation would the Islanders have to sign that

Right now he is making under a million dollars with a cap hit of like 3.25 in bonuses he wont get. NEXT season, he makes 4M.

Maybe he cares more about leading the franchise that drafted him from the cellar to being a contender in the NHL a bit more than cashing in in 4 years. The nerve he must have.

Crosby is a poor example, he is vastly underpaid. And yes, a contract that goes until he is an UFA would be preferable.

How about Stamkos then, he just signed for 7.5M, that would be 1.5M more then Stamkos. Why exactly would the Islanders want to pay Tavares more then Stamkos and for 1 less year? (is it so both guys can get together and sign with the Leafs when they UFAs in 5 years?)

Fair deal for both sides. Good job on both parties to get it done. Good thing his agent isn't Meehan lol. Or is it?

Also LOTS of credit to snow, all his contracts with his RFA's have been GREAT deals.

You have to take in to account the income tax situations in Florida and New York. And yes, players should be able to sign where they want obviously.

He put up 67 points in 79 games last season as a 20 year old. Ignoring the fact that he still has another year on his ELC, he's definitely worth a 5.5 cap hit.

Good news for Isles. The fans can sleep easy regarding Tavares for a while.

Yes he is for real. No state income tax in florida meanwhile long island has some of the highest real estate taxes in the country..

IMO Toews signed a hometown discount.

If it was shorter term its an overpayment but come the 4th-6th years it will likely be a bargain. Good for both sides IMO.

If I was Isles brass, I would hold off on giving him the 'C' right now. He just signed his first big money contract, let it sink in. Being the captain is a big responsibility. I'd let him play another year first if it was my decision.

Either way, good for both sides.

Tavares is already a #1 center, and worth every penny of the cap hit already. Isles got a good deal.

People complaining about this deal?

Fantastic value at 5.5 per, especially with the Cap having gone up.

He's going to be a great player.

As for the Toews/Kane thing, he's scored right around what Toews did when he got his extension on a much, much worse team.

Good deal for the Islanders.

Right now I think 5.5 is too much even if it does kick in later.

More points than Rick Nash, Dany Heatley and more goals than Jeff Carter playing with lesser talented players than what those 3 have.....

We're really gonna complain about his contract...?

lol @ people saying a #1 center who makes a guy like Moulson a 30+ goal scorer is overpaid. Get a grip.

Great deal for the Isles, here's to hoping Snow keeps up with his dredging work.

Isles need to reach the cap floor. So his cap hit right now has ZERO relevance what so ever.

Great deal for a potential 100 point player.

To be fair, I think that Moulson would be up around 30 goals no matter what team he played for--he's a classic garbage goal kind of player who scores because of his great positioning.

You can pretty much fully credit Tavares with P.A. Parenteau's 50 points, on the other hand.
