Shane Doan voices opinion on head shots

Pretty good read and not surprisingly, I completely agree with Doaner!

I agree 100% with Doaner. I hope this story gets more discussion going in the league.

Hockey fans should worry about the league becoming Sidney Crosby apologists and end up half-ruining the game because of what "Sid the Kid" says.

Hitting is a huge and necessary part of the game. The blind side rule is a good addition to deal with the Matt Cookes of the league but 0 tolerance is unenforceable IMO.

I still say removing the armour padding on elbows and shoulders would make the biggest difference in reducing the number of injuries.

Yes, I agree. Thats' one of the major causes. They've simply gotta re-design shoulder & elbow pads that feature soft-give at point of impact. Not sure whether its' one of the CHL Jr. leagues or NCAA, but one of thems instituting that this season. Additionally, the new boards/glass systems will help, though it seems many of the hits that result in concussions are open-ice. The speed of the game & the size of the players compared to the past combined with the removal of the center ice red-line..... yikes!. I know everyone loves it being gone, but if it slows things down a tad, for safety sake, might be worth considering its reinstatement. I'd also be doing away with the Instigator Rule, allowing the players to police themselves & dispense retribution on headhunters' & cheap shot artists like Cooke.

Yeah...so much for the safety of the players! Lol. There are rules in place for a reason. I guess we could go with anarchy and see what happens. The offenders get punished.

Great article by the Captain! Heck of a guy!!

Absolutely. Thats the way hockey used to be played before they started to gussy it all up with political correctness, bringing in the Instigator Rule etc. Organized Mayhem. Let the players deal with their own..... theres' a "Code", an unwritten guideline that for generations players followed. Now, as it just so happens, Ive found a dog-eared & blood stained copy, and Id like to share a few of its passages with you doaner. K?.

Weights & Classes; all players shall be categorized into the following...

*Heavyweight
*Cruiserweight
*Middle Weight
*Lightweight
*Doug Weight

Choosing an Opponent; all players must stay within their weightclasses (whenever possible)

*A Heavyweight vs. another Heavy or
*A Heavyweight vs. a Cruiserweight who has instigated the confrontation or
*A Heavy/Cruiserweight vs. a Middleweight who has attempted to injure a teammate ot
*An Overweight drunken Flyers fan who has fallen into the Penalty Box

Invitation to a Fight; when you hear the following, its time to fight

* "Lets Go"
* "Drop em"
* "Would you like to hear a detailed rundown of my fantasy draft picks"?
* "Honestly Shane, Im finding your twittering & tweets redundant & just downright juvenile"

When to Start a Fight;
it is appropriate to start a fight when

* Your team is losing badly at home, its late in the 3rd period, you wanna wake up the crowd
*An opponent has committed an offence requiring immediate retribution
* You see Gary Bettman cozying up the IceHedge Boys in the stands in October

When Not to Fight;

* Your Coach has given you specific instructions not to
* During the playing of the National Anthems

Punishable Acts;

* Shooting the puck at the net after a whistle
* Spraying the goalie with snow when hes' covering the puck
* Attempting that cheap breakaway move from NHL 2005
* Being Matt Cooke

Removal of Equipment; if your opponent

* Removes his gloves, you must do the same
* Removes his visor & helmet, you must do the same
* Removes his left or right elbow pad; optional
* Removes his jersey & pants; you might wanna consider the possibility that youve accidentally wandered into Zedno Chara's Super-Stretch Limo.

When the Fight is Over;

* The linesmen make an effort to intervene
* One or both players fall to the ice
* You hear your opponents trainer pleading;

"look Buddy, could you stop wailing on my guy for a coupla secs' while we load him onto this here Gurney"?

Realistically, if you donít want to get hit and you donít want to get hurt, then donít play. If you go out on the ice, youíre going to get hit. If you want to play shinny, then go play shinny. Itís not the same.

I agree with Shane.

For participants, there's always tournament golf, fishing, poker, bowling and curling for those concerned about violent contact. All to varying degrees accepted competitive activities.

Canucks fan saying bravo Shane.

I'm more concerned for the game at the start of this season than I've ever been in my life. Good to hear some people in the NHL feel the same way I do. If you're NHL calibre but you don't want to get hurt, you can still be the best shinny player ever.

I disagree with Doan.

If head shots were banned, there would still be plenty of violent hits, "accidents" and injuries. If you're going to hit someone, just make sure its below the neck. Not hard at all to enforce, and it would not detract from the game.

Head shots are banned
It's the questionable zero tolerance policy that's being discuss, and accidents that occur from the fast pace and the potential injuries that can occur from trying to stop contact, while on the ice, at the last moment, just because of the interpretation of a zero tolerance policy...
Hockey is a contact sport, take that away, then all you have left is Ballerinas...

That's exactly what I think, if you don't want to play in a sport that is extremely physical, then don't. It's freaking hockey, it's supposed to be rough and tumble!
