Honestly Avery is one of the biggest question marks coming into camp.

He could easily end up on any line 1-4 to being cut or scratched. I'm expecting the former, a contract year (which is a bigger deal for Sean Avery than most players) and a low S% last year really should indicate good things from Sean.

I've soured of him late, but I really hope he wins me back this season.

Are you out of your mind? I have no problem with trying it for a few shifts, but if this is where you want him to be permanently, then you're crazy.

If it works, does that make you crazy for making a bold statement too early?

Rather see Boyle get a shot with that line.

Yuck! I want Avery as far away from that line as possible.

Yes, it would. But does it make you crazy if it doesn't? Yes, and probably crazier than it would make me.

He's in the box way too often to be on the first line. Would screw up the rotations.

you guys are all hopping off avery after one bad season where he was shuffled in and out of lines and never was able to get chemistry with any one line. avery and gaborik have played together and both of them look great on a line together. avery is EXACTLY the type of player that line needs. he's fast and he takes the body. when you have a line with gaborik and richards you're going to need a guy who can do the dirty things to balance out two finesse guys. who is going to forecheck or dig pucks out of the corner? who on this team is better at doing the dirty stuff than avery?

in my opinion, the only other good option for that first line spot is fedotenko. similar player although i don't think he's as good. i'm not giving up on avery after a down year when he's coming up on the last year of his contract. i think he'll change everyone's mind if he's playing top line minutes with top line talent, but if tortorella decides to shuffle him around all year again he'll look awful.

Just don't think Avery is mentally mature enough to handle the responsibilities that come with being a first-liner. Would rather see him focus on his pest role elsewhere in the lineup.

I don't think anyone who was on the Avery bandwagon whether they jumped off or not ever would have advocated playing him on the first line.

i'm sure nobody who's been an avery fan over the years expected there to be a line of richards and gaborik that needed to be filled. correct me if i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure one of the gaborik's hat tricks came on one of those handful of games where they put avery on the first line.

i'm not 100% sure it would work, but i don't see any better option. i've been advocating it since the first day we signed richards. i think avery has all the physical ability to play top line minutes, and gaborik likes playing with guys like that. avery can be hotheaded and lose control sometimes, but from a pure hockey point of view who on this team is better for that line? (i'm not including callahan, dubinsky, or anisimov)

for the occasional game i could see it

but he is by no means a long term answer for the 1st line LW position question

Would it really be that shocking if Avery worked out well on that first line?

I'm not even a blind Avery lover because I think he's not very good defensively, but he's very north-south style of player that suits Gaborik. He can also pass pretty well and absolutely has pretty good hands.

And I don't care what anyone says, teams bother with Avery far too much and leave their position to hit him JUST because the opposing crowds give it a huge reaction. If they are at all concerned about Avery, that leaves things open for Richards and Gabby.

I would not be absolutely shocked if this worked.

In Jagr's last year, I think our best line was definitely Avery, dubinsky, Jagr.

The answer would be Dubi, who has way more offensive ability than Avery has ever shown.

Not if he's only going to bring his A-game once every 5 games....

yes but why would you get rid of the dubi-anisimov-callahan line that has been so great for us over the last few years? the point is to keep that line intact and take somebody from the rest of the team and fill the 1st line void. dubinsky and callahan are obviously better wingers than avery is but i doubt they'd be separated.

If he doesn't have the puck, he's frequently off-sides, when he does have the puck, he often shoots a soft wrister into the goalie's glove and kills the play.... Frustrating for sure.

To be honest i'd be fine with it for a few games. I thought Avery looked alright with Gabby last year.

I think Avery's going to be scratched quite a bit this year, too.

Being hes one of the more inconsistent players I've ever seen, especially over the last couple of years, I don't think he can handle much of anything more than "a few games"

...which leads to your second comment.
