2011-2012 Training Camp Thread

Camp officially opens today! I was thinking maybe we could have a master thread to post articles, tweets, and our thoughts about any and all developments that come out of this year's training camp. I'll start with this:

http://islanders.nhl.com/club/news.h...id=DL|NYI|home

None of it surprising, but I figured I'd post the link to the article anyway.

Let's Go Islanders!!

I miss the old coverage of the training camps in Canada when Billy Jaffe did live scrimmages and player intereviews around the town.

Sounds like Steve Staios (D) will be at camp on a tryout as well. Should be reporting in the next day or two. As per Newsday Arthur Staple.

I really figured we would of signed McCabe.. I guess he wanted more $$

Yashin not being there does not surprise me but hell if he came to camp and looked great I would of loved him on the team

No Katic unfortunately, even though he's on the list. Also, goalie wise, Poulin would have to show he's Roy/Brodeur combined to make it with the big team this year (out of camp). Just too much ahead of him with Montoya/Nabakov/DP.

I'm ok with him getting one more year in the AHL. No need to rush any of our goalie prospects as long as one of Nabby/Montoya/DP play well.

Some are saying McCabe may have unofficially retired or is thinking about it, he was very close with Belak and reportedly devastated.

If Steve Staios (D) reports (as Newsday writter Arthur Staple thinks he will) to camp anyone think he will make our 23 man roster? I do not think Staios has much left in the tank and would be nothing more than a number 7-8 d-man on our thin D-core. Anyone think Steve Staios can help our defense this year???

I as well was hoping for Bryan McCabe to sign with the Islanders for 1-2 years! McCabe could help the PP play some solid defense and be a good leader for a young Isles team.

I don't see Staios making the team, nothing more than a bottom pairing guy(which we have plenty of) at this point in his career.

Rather just give the spot to Wishart.

Absolute worst case scenario, it can't hurt to have some vets like Pandolfo and Staios around the kids in camp.

Staios is a RH vet who could be paired with any of the young LH d-men. He's good security in case someone like Eaton gets hurt in camp, etc..

As a RH shooter Staios would be nice to have as a 5-6-7 Dman. He adds some grit and leadership to the team. Yet I don`t think he will make it.

Staois on the way:

This could be out there. Steve Staios is on his way to the Islanders camp for a tryout. Good man. Still has more to give.

Staois will be a good guy to have around the young defensemen in the locker room. The guy is the definition of a pro and if need be, he'll be a decent bottom-pair fill in. He'll always try his hardest, but his body is pretty battered.

The problem is we don't need any more players like him. I am sure there are more guys who could barely qualify for 3rd pair due to age & injuries. Do you hire all of them too? More than likely he shows up and doesn't make it so this is probably a non-issue. People are just tired of hearing the plan C's being wheeled out when everyone including the GM acknowledges the need for a top 4 defenseman to be added now.

Since the Isles have invented a time machine that goes back 7 years, can we get Lidstrom instead?

With the way injuries are spreading through islander country the last few years, I will take a hockey player on wheels nowadays. The more the merrier. Welcome aboard, and do not catch the flu please.
