I would like to see Horcoff pass on the "C" to Ryan Smyth, I believe he thrives playing for Edmonton and we all know how passionate he is. He already is a valuable mentor for any young gun with his hard work and dedication.
I think there's a chance that Ryan Smyth does wear the C at some point for the Edmonton Oilers. I actually think he has more gas left in the tank than most people give him credit for so I don't think its out of the realm of possiblity that he'd still be around when Horcoff moves on. But Horcoff giving it to him this season isn't a good idea.
Hall will have enough on his shoulders being the first star in 20 years to play in Edmonton and being expected to lead the team to a Stanley Cup. I don't think he has to be captain on top of that, as well.
Horcoff has been a great captain, I don't see any reason to take that title away from him
Horcoff's been nailed for plenty of criticism on these boards for offensively failing to live up to the exhorbitant contract he signed.
But at no time has his commitment to the team come into question, nor his work ethic. He's shown plenty of leadership and worn the copper and blue with pride. He's as worthy a captain for this squad as anyone.
The Only Oiler jersey I possess is a Ryan Smyth Jersey.
That said not even I would want him to be Captain at this point. Maybe in a year or two as he settles in again.
I mostly think the C is completely pointless (team meetings and talking to the ref, that's all you get to do that anyone else can't), but striping someone of the C is not cool. Wasn't cool when Dallas did it to Modano, wouldn't be cool if they did it to Horcoff.
I suspect, because of the way Horcoff's deal is structured, they will buy him out in June of 2013. After that, it's Taylor Hall's team, not Ryan Smyth's.
