Anton Volchenkov

Was wondering what his value is? He would definetly take cap space off the Devils books. Does he have NMC/NTC? What would it take to land him?

I think that he should be staying in New Jersey, but if the financial rumors are true, than he might be the 1st player shipped out.

I would love to see him in Toronto, but with the depth at defense it would be Burke's smartest move.

Just signed a 6 year deal with a NTC. Not going anywhere.

Lou already trimmed some money off.

-He was just signed last summer to a long term deal with a NTC
-We saved plenty of money when we traded Rolston and bought out White
-Look at the Devils defense without him and tell me how amazing it looks

Exactly without him they are easily bottom 5 defense

Value of Volchenkov?

Another 6 million dollar LW, we only have 3, Lou demands 5!

Volchenkov has an NTC, and as mentioned, the Devils' defence needs him. He's not going anywhere.

And Tallinder just can't be traded away either, especially not with a Larsson that could possibly be his defensive partner.

I'm not convinced they're not already a bottom-5 defense. Depends on how the kids do. Still, they'll somehow manage to challenge for the Jennings.

Yeah, we're not a bottom 5 defense I'm sorry. Not sure how any team in the top 10 in GAA (the good top 10) is a bottom 5 defense.

Cue "it's only because of Brodeur" or "it's only because of defensive forwards" comebacks from the same people that insult Brodeur and our forward group.

Volchenkov is important because of he's a veteran on a young blueline and he brings a physical presence that we've lacked since Stevens. We're certainly worse without him, but to say we're a bottom 5 defense is ridiculous. There were 5 teams last year with a 3.00+ GAA. We were in the 2.50 range, good enough for 9th place. Tell me that you'd rather have the defenses of Columbus, NYI, Edmonton, and Colorado so I can laugh.

Bottom 5

You can throw Toronto and their 2.99 GAA in bottom 5, if you want.

GAA =/= how good a defensive core is.

Watching them play?

There's probably 10 team's defensive cores that I'd rather have over Jerseys that have a worse GAA then the Devils.

I'm dissapointed that Lou couldn't bring in a PMD. Even one like Jack Hillen who has a suspect defensive side but is a good puck rusher.

You can't really justify an opinion based on watching them play, although you're still entitled to it.

What's stopping me from saying "I watch all the teams play and the Devils have the best offense and defense in the league." There's nothing to back it up.

As far as pure defense goes, the Devils really aren't as bad as people make them out to me. There certainly aren't any names to gush over, but the unit as a whole succeeded plenty once MacLean was gone. They're issue is lack of puck moving ability. If Volchenkov had a Dan Boyle-esque offensive talent to his game, I'm sure no one would be ridiculing the Devils D corps at all. Really, I think this group is going to surprise many, many people this year. Tallinder and Volchenkov have a year as Devils under their belts, our strongest D-man (physically) in Salvador is return, and our kids like Fayne and company have some NHL experience. Then there's the wild card in Larsson.

In a few years, when Larsson, Merrill, and Urbom are all NHL regulars, the defense is going to be among the games best young bluelines, assuming those three pan out of course.

Same here. Hopefully Taormina/Larsson/Stralman can provide some of that. Still boggles my mind he didn't give up a 2nd for Liles.

Considering the way the Devils dumped salary this summer, I suspect that might have had something to do with it. I guess they expect a kid to be able to step up into the role.

Boggles my mind Garth didn't either. I think Liles was the only top 4 dman traded this offseason.

His value to New Jersey is higher than his value to other teams I think. He's the Babchuk of defensive defencemen. Marty isn't getting any younger, they need Anton to absorb some pucks for him.

Yea, he probably made more saves than most of the goaltenders that he played with back Ottawa.
