So, we're missing Prust and Staal?

Are Anisimov and Sauer ready to go?

AA and Sauer are back. Prust is precautionary. Don't blame them for taking it easy on him too as he was banged up a good portion of last yr.

will be interesting to see if Staal is taking more time off. Regardless he will not be doing much but I expect to see him back in Europe.

Yeah, that'd be my guess. Good thing is that if Staal is going to miss time, best to have it at the beginning of the season. More time to make up games lost, more teams aren't really playing their best, things are more open and not everyone has to be exactly ont he same page, etc

Rangers can get by if Staal isn't out for a long time

Staal passed his baseline tests.

The Ranger medical staff have cleared him for CONTACT.

He was sent home. Big deal. Concussions are something - especially the last few years - that have are not being taken lightly whatsoever. I can guarantee the Ranger staff are keeping a close eye on his symptoms.

But he passed his test and is allowed contact at practice. If you can't see the significance in this, I don't know what to tell you.

It certainly sounds good but it's worrying on one hand to hear that he's cleared for contact, and on the other that he's being sent home because he has headaches or doesn't feel good.

You would think that suffering PCS after working out would be something that would keep you from being cleared for contact, so there's a bit of a strange dichotomy going on here.

Hopefully it's just that we're not getting the whole picture and Staal really isn't feeling that bad, they just are being so careful that they want him feeling absolutely 100%

Do we know that he was sent home for something concussion related - and not food poisoning or the flu?

Don't get me wrong it's worrying to get the news that he suffered PCS over the summer and was sent home for not feeling well on back to back days, but have they actually been linked?

While I am concerned i think at this point every team is being overly cautious with concussions. 5-6 years ago we might have not even heard about the concussions that are happening now. But now there is tremendous effort to protect the players.

In the past i think Sid and Marc would be playing in pre season games no questions asked. Now not so much, which is a good thing its important to protect your players.....

On another note i despise Don Cherry but he made a statement awhile back that the elbow pads the players current use are a big part of the problem. I couldnt agree more they make the elbow a brick wall and a much larger surface to hit people with. Change the elbows and i think you will see two things happen, 1 less concussions and 2 players not willing to throw out there elbows as much.

I knew there had to be an explanation for the poor play he displayed at the end of last season.

Staal just addressed media about post-concussion symptoms; said he still gets headaches--sometimes lasting 4-5 hours--after hard workouts
I had no idea it was this bad. When did Staal get concussed?

Back in February when he was hit by his brother Eric

Basically sounds like they've been getting better and he's feeling better, and they'll just keep taking it slow. He won't play until he can go several days with no symptoms

In my mind we got a long way to go here. Better than yesterday for sure, but certainly nothing to get the Pom-Poms out over.

4-5 hour headaches after a hard workout! This does not sound good. Makes me think we may not see Staal for awhile. I would not be surprised if he does not make the trip to Europe. Hope I'm overreacting, but that does not sound like someone who should be cleared for contact.

Lets see - Feb was 7 months ago and we expect him to come back any day? Sounds pretty bad to me.

He shouldn't go to Europe. There's no reason to send him on a Jet across the planet and back for two games against the other conference as well as other meaningless exhibition games. Let him rest and see if he's ready to go for the 15th against the Isles. If not, then shut him down until the team gets back for the 27th. Not really a good idea to send him on a plane to the other side of the continent either if he's still having issues.

For his own health and the teams long term success, it's better if they let him rest and get over this as opposed to playing him in early season games.

He almost certainly will fly to Europe. He only has problems when doing strenuous exercise, not from other things. He'll be fine on a flight

If Staal is out we are going to find out real quick how good Tim Erixon is. Fair to rely on a rookie ? Of course not but he may surprise

I will hold out hope till he's not dressed for game 1

Well again, at the beginning of the year it can be easier for a rookie to jump in and be impressive and play great for 20 games or so before hitting the wall/the rest of the vets start playing up to standard. Much better than Staal being out at the end of the season

We should be used to it. This time last year we were relying on Mike Sauer and McDonagh to come in and play well straight away. We were saying that if 1 of Staal/Girardi was to miss any significant time that we would be in deep trouble. Sauer was there the entire season and McDonagh came up in January. Going by what I've seen and heard about Erixon I wouldnt be surprised to see Erixon make McDonagh-type of impact.

This just gets worse and worse everytime I read more about it.

Staal's quotes are ridiculous. He can't do a single workout without getting headaches? Yeah guys, this is great news for his chances of playing anytime soon. If he can't complete a workout without feeling headaches afterwards, how on earth is he going to play a hockey game? At least he'll only have to miss day games if he gets his headaches in the afternoon.

Am I the only one who finds it strange that Strang reported that Staal was getting headaches from working out and Richards had a sore groin, but Zipay and Gross didn't?
