A bummer, because I was hoping Hecht would be back soon, if not as quickly as Wednesday. The extended break might have helped, but it's still probably not enough time.

Hecht not on the ice for practice today. If he plays, it may not be for some time.

I'd much rather he take his time and come back 100% -- even if that means January or later, than come back early, suffer a setback, and miss more time later in the season, or worse, in the playoffs.
We don't need Hecht as much in the regular season...but we do need him in the post-season.

Pretty much.
As far as I'm concerned, he can take it easy til January/February, then slowly get into it, get his legs going, get the feeling back, and hopefully he's 100% come April.
Heartbreaking. Hopefully he's not done for good, this team needs him.
If Hecht is still unable to play by the New Year - with no progress or hopes of recovery - I'm curious: does anyone else think the Sabres should keep him on IR for the year and consider signing Grier to a short-term deal for the balance of the season? It'd be primarily for the playoffs - the same basis most think Hecht will be needed....
I'd love Hecht to be in the lineup ASAP but I worry that if this becomes the kind of drawn-out, career threatening type of situation like we saw with Connolly or Savard, that the Sabres could keep waiting til the end of the regular season for Hecht and then not have him - or a suitable replacement - for the postseason.
Speaking of Hecht ..... How does LTIR work?... If they place him on that does that mean he is done for year??
And that does clear us up for some Cap relief does it not!?
No. Once a player is placed on LTIR, they have to go on it for a minimum of a week and their cap comes off the books. This can also be done retroactively, so that Buffalo gets "credit" for any games that Hecht missed but was still on the roster for.

46 plus Kotalik still counts = 47 ?? (am I falsely counting some Rochester contracts?)
Do the Gwinette signings count (I assume not, as they are not through BUF)?
Am I missing some?
i.e., are they free to sign a couple more bodies, if needed, to address injury issues, whether in BUF or ROC?
They have 46 as Pysyk's slides since he's not playing pro.

At least, that's my understanding of it.
It does not come off the books. LTIR only allows a team to go over the cap during the time the player injured is on IR. Once they come off, it gets re-figured as full cap. It basically only helps if it is season-ending or if there is someone who can come off the books via trade or waivers at the time the LTIR ends. It's not a panacea.
“He wasn’t doing so well. It’s probably the first time since this process that I’m starting to get concerned. We’ve shut Jochen down at different times. We’ve shut him down on doctor’s instructions and if the doctors feel it’s best to shut him down for a period of time, we’ll shut him down. That’s really in their hands, that isn’t up to our medical staff and that isn’t up to Jochen, we’re under some guidance and we have to trust what our people are telling us.”

True,
though Vancouver GM Mike Gillis has played the LTIR card very well over the years....First with Demitra (RIP) two seasons ago and last year with Salo...Just as one guy goes down with a serious injury, suddenly the guy who looked out for the season is "ready to go"....Suspicious to say the least.
This Jochen news really blows, thsi team needs a guy like him at the moment. Guy who can play anywhere in the line-up provides great defensive play. Maybe they should go out and get a Top 9 forward capable of playing Great in his own zone ..
The beginning of the end, methinks. Get well, Jochen.
I'm of two minds on this. On the one hand most things point to your post. On the other hand there have been guys that have returned and played effectively after long absences due to a concussion. Or maybe I'm just clinging to false hope
what's the word on Ennis? I know he is week to week.. but any word on when he will be back? And when he comes back, where does he fit in the Sabres line up?
just curious thanks..
have him in a pool where I only get a couple trades and might have to let him go for Eberle but I really like Ennis

Haven't seen anything on his timetable, but when he comes back who knows where he'll end up. The top 9 looks good right now (Vanek-Adam-Pominville, Leino-Roy-Stafford, Gerbe-Gaustad-Boyes) so it's entirely possible that Ennis will play with McCormick and Kaleta. Or someone else will get hurt and everything will get jumbled. Or Lindy Ruff will remember he is Lindy Ruff and mix up the bingo balls.
Sucks about Jochen. Personally, I'd be very surprised if he played again this year
Taking it a step further, if he doesn't play at all this season, it could spell the end of his NHL career as well. At age 35 next summer, he'd have hard time landing a new contract with other teams - or even the Sabres - after coming off a concussion-plagued campaign.
I hope he can come back - and think he will, since the hits that led to his concussion didn't seem anywhere as violent or monumental as the kind of hits Crosby, Savard, Connolly, Lindros, LaFontaine and other infamous concussion victims that missed substantial time.
If he doesn't though, it will be a sad ending to a career to a player that was always underrated yet invaluable for what he provided.
