Plus/Minus: this year versus last

Player statsLet's limit ourselves to skaters with at least 14 games during both seasons. Assume that we don't go into a second-half-swoon. Double the current season numbers as a projection. The changes are interesting...

PLAYER2011-2012Projected2020-2011Change
Wheeler+10+20+2+18
Kane+9+18-12+30
Hainsey+9+18+3+15
Little+7+14+11+3
Burmistrov+5+10-12+22
Antropov+4+8-17+25
Enstrom+4+8-10+18
Oduya+2+4-15+19
Ladd-2-4-10+6
Bogosian-2-4-27+23
Stapleton-4-8-10+2
Stuart-4-8-80
Slater-5-10+4-14
Byfuglien-8-16-2-14
Thorburn-10-20-4-16

Divided into 3 groups, we have
  • Major Improvement: Wheeler Kane Hainsey Burmistrov Antropov Enstrom Oduya Bogosian
  • Little Change: Little Ladd Stapleton Stuart
  • Major regression: Slater Byfuglien Thorburn
Comments? I'll start off by mentioning that in the pre-season, the threads about Bogosian, and especially Oduya, were filled with more moaning and groaning than the soundtrack of a XXX movie. Both of them are pleasant surprises at the halfway point.

nice stats Knight

The one I will keep my eye on will be Buff. At one point this season Big Buff was -10 but he has gone +2 since that time and that was about the time he started playing smarter and picking his spots a bit better. If Buff can continue that trend and go +5 for the balance of the season and get his number down to about -3 or better I think we make the playoffs.

I know that sounds bold but too me it will indicate our entire team has bought into a responsible system and those odd man rush's will have been kept to a minimum. If we can get Buff playing a plus game while bringing his offensive value to the team we will be a very tough out.

Slater is probably the most surprising, but it might be due to the fact that he used to play on the 4th line and this year he's playing more of a checking role.

I like the chart! Bogo has improved this year so far. I was one of the groaners in regards to Bogo and I will clearly admit I had my doubts in his ability based on past performances. So far he has impressed me and I am a supporter of his play.

We will have to repost the numbers at the end of the season and see how accurate the projections were. Could be pretty neat.

I'd be more interested in seeing the breakdown at halfway point of last season seeing as the team was playing well the first half.

Also I've been looking but couldn't find it. Anyone know where to find plus/minus ratigns at a certain point in time. Curious to see Buff's rating after the first month when the Jets were struggling to now.

+/- stat would stay the same if projected out for the season. doubling it would suggest that the + guys either score a lot more and get scored on a lot less and the - guys scored less and were scored on at a higher rate.

assuming that the team doesn't tank (like last year) also makes this stat completely useless as you're comparing a fairly good half season to a fairly terrible full season.

now i'm going back to work in excel doing nerd math.

on a non negative note - bogo has really turned it up this season. glad the change in scenery (coaching/being a year older/whatever) helped

Great chart! Give the coaching staff 2-3 years with this club and it will only get better IMO.

I still can't believe the same Zach Bogosian who has been one of our better defensemen this year (arguably our best defenseman) was -27 last year.

The Jets player stats are at http://jets.nhl.com/club/stats.htm If you click on "G" (Goals) it'll sort on that column. I clicked on "+/-" and it sorted on that column. To get a game-by-game breakdown for a player click on that players name. Part-way down the screen are a set of tabs.

"STATS, GAME LOG, NOTES, NEWS, BIO"

Click on the "GAME LOG" tab, and you'll get summaries for each game.

Credit to "WinnipegFalcon" for pointing that out to me.
