R.J. Umberger Signs 5-Year $23 Million Extension

Per the man himself on Twitter:

Quote:
We have signed RJ to a 5 year extension. Thrilled to have such a big part of our team signed long term.
http://twitter.com/#!/GMScottHowson

Great signing, love the term and money. First two years have a no-trade clause, last three have a modified no-trade.

This is a big thing to have resolved. Nice work on both sides.

VERY good deal for the Jackets, and for RJ. He gets a long-term deal, we get a great dollar value on him. This one will go into the books as one of the best signings in the entire league, mark my words.

Very nice to have R.J. on the team for at least 5 more years and I agree the deal is very good.

4.5 million for RJ seems a little steep (especially those last 2 or 3 years) but if the cap keeps rising it shouldn't be too big of an issue.

That's out of the way. More money than some would like, likely less than open market. Years seem fine.

Really not a big raise considering what his cap hit is now. I think this is a great, reasonable signing and now we have a good core group of guys locked up for a large chunk of their primes. Great days could be on the horizon.

Simply great sign, Umby is our soul... plus good money for both side.

Btw, I think Howson has first time "free hands" in this year... what do you think?

That is the key. We aren't signing a bunch of guys who will be too old for half their contracts or won't be getting to their prime until their contract is almost over. We are signing guys who will be in their primes for most, if not all, of their contract lengths.

I do not think it is a lot.

R.J. is the second/third (scoring not checking) line player but he is great in the defense plus he is an ideal player for PO and very important for us. So, see agreements in this time. Plus R.J. is always good playing player.

Fair signing. He would've made similar, if not more, on the open market.

This pleases me.
