Unofficial Trade Rumor/Proposal Thread | Part VIII/Leafs Interested In Gagner?
Is anyone else shocked that no team out there has offer sheeted Drew Doughty?
This is a player who could easily become the perennial Norris Trophy winner for the next decade (Ok, not 10 in a row, but easily could win 5). A total diamond in the rough. Why would a team in the middle of the pack not offer sheet him? THe price would be 4 first round picks. Which, if you are a middle of the pack team now, and assuming DD would only improve your team, would be mid to late picks in each year. The chances of having even one of a mid-to-late 1st round pick making it are not that great, let alone being an impact player. I'm sure there's lotsa blogs out there that have written stories on stats of those picks over the years.
I'm not suggesting DD would go to a place like Edmonton, but I'm shocked a team hasen't stepped up and offer sheeted the kid. At the very least, if the team was in the west (Vancouver for example, then trade Lou to make room), it would at least force LA to match and therefore run up their cap number, or at least cause friction. I'd do it just to mess with 'em.
Thoughts?

Even the Oilers should offer 7 million if that's all it takes. That wouldn't even mess up the salary structure. If you can rationalize it for the Oilers, then I don't understand why every team hasn't at least looked into offering DD a contract.
1. A team needs the cap space to take on his ~$7MM salary.
2. A team needs to have their draft picks available for compensation (which means at least this year's 1st/2nd/3rd, and probably next year's 1st, and maybe more) to even be able to make an offer.
Still not sure why Detroit hasn't thrown one at him.
That's not Detroit's style at all!
First thing I think when someone is holding out... you're dealing with an ego. Secondly, they're not going to offer him more than Datsyuk... ROFL I wouldn't offer him more than Lindstrom if I had Lindstrom.
Anyways, LA's offer was bigger than Lindstrom, soooooo... I can understand why teams aren't offer-sheeting him. Doughty can go shove his thumbs up his youknowwhat if he's just after the money. I don't know all his motivations, maybe he'd prefer a move but is kind of stuck because of the CBA RFA restrictions.
Side note on Doughty that I thought was hilarious... heard it on the radio in Calgary: Doughty and Lombardi had agreed that they would not talk to the media regarding negotiations... now Doughty and his agent were upset because as soon as there was a hiccup, Lombardi started going to the media.
In the HF world, teams readily trade away players they just signed.
Happens all the time in reality, amirite?
It happened to Setoguchi this off season, but you're right, it's rare. Probably because it's a major dick move and might hurt a team's reputation with players.

Yes, it did happen to him, although that was right after a contract extension, which is less rare than trading a player away that you just brought into an organization. I'm having a hard time thinking of the last time that's happened.
We're not getting Doughty, and Bogosian just signed in Winnipeg. Why would they trade him?
Let's just let Petry develop into that type of player because he has the potential to be a good #2 defenseman.
Now, as for our contract situation.. I think we could see a few moves before the season begins to open up contracts to Martindale and Tulupov. Whether that's a minor trade or waiving someone remains to be seen but these two players deserve to be in the AHL more than a few guys we have right now.

Ales Kotalik comes to mind, but either way it's quite rare.
Do you mean being traded by the Rangers? That happened about halfway through the 09-10 season. That doesn't qualify.
How often does a player get signed by a team in the off-season, and then traded before the season even starts?
Besides Setoguchi, i can't think of a one. Moo is right on this.
As much as i would have liked Bogo here, one reclamation project at a time please (see Cam Barker). If we are going to trade for a D-man, it won't be DD or Bogo.

Reason: sounds better.

I know this has been discussed before but after seeing Bob Mackenzie tweet that DD's agent is more than likely going to be trying to get an offer sheet for him it makes more and more sense for Oiler's to offer him one...
If we can offer Drew something like 7-7.2mil/season for 7 years, the compensation would only be two 1st round picks, a second, and a third.
I believe the brackets now a days is you give four first rounders for anything over $7.8 mil. So if we offer 7.2 mil we'd only be giving up 2 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd.
I understand we need to resign our prospects in a couple years but I do not believe they are going to be a huge cap hit judging by Tavaras' contract.
So if we can build this team around these guys it would look a hell of a lot better.
Hall, Eberle, RNH, MPS, Doughty.
It instantly gives us our #1 dman and instantly improves our team hopefully making those draft pics not lottery draft picks...
