Damn, Doughty would really make our defence something else. I would definitely give up the two 1sts, one 2nd and one 3rd for Doughty at the four years that he is asking for. I'm sure that after 4 years with the organization (playing with Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi, RNH) he would welcome Edmonton as his home. Also, if Tambo gives into what he wants and treats him with respect (obviously showing it by giving him his 4 year deal) I could see him liking our management staff here. We still need help on defence but it certainly takes a huge step forward with Doughty. Maybe make a trade with Hemsky and Bogosian and our defence is set.
Doughty-Whitney (legit number 1 defenceman and a legit number 2 defenceman)
Petry-Gilbert (solid puck moving pair that would be great as a number 3 and four. would give marincin-klefbom time to develop)
Smid-Barker (two high draft picks trying to live up to potential until teubert and peckham are ready to take on larger roles)
Teubert-Pechkam (would bring a world of pain for opposing forwards)
Marincin-Klefbom (both probably have top pairing potential but would look awesome behind doughty and whitney)
Musil-Sutton (two tough guys that have an outside shot of sticking)
I think we already have the depth but we need more guys that can handle first line minutes and play larger roles when injuries occur.

If Ryan Whitney was healthy to start the season I'd think about it. Right now even with Doughty our defence could keep us out of the playoffs.
Maybe it wouldn't guarantee playoffs, but I think it would guarantee that they don't give up a better player than Doughty with those two first picks they'd have to give up.
7 million for Doughty, as well as the opportunity to make him your Lidstrom, is a steal in my opinion, I just can't believe no one's offered him that. I also can't believe that the Kings would let him walk, but that's besides the point.
I don't know squat about this hockey break outfit. Anyone know if they have ever broken anything?
I'd love to spend the day dreaming about Doughty in the orange and blue but until I see something from Bobby Mac, I'm going to err on the side of "not going to happen"

Didn't the main page put ****** when people use them? Sounds like another guy that got one thing and then just went off of other rumors.
I would definitely offer $7M/year on a 4 year deal to Doughty.
Pros:
-He instantly gives us a respectable defense
-Speeds up our rebuild
-Allows us to challenge for a playoff spot
-Pisses off DL
Cons:
-Might set the bar for our upcoming RFAs
-Might get a "revenge OS" come our way
-Potential for giving up 2 really good picks if we can't get out of the basement
-Might strap us for cap space in a couple of years
Regardless of how probable a deal like this is, we can afford to give up a lot of depth in order to bring back some top end talent on the backend. I'm not too worried about giving up our 1st round picks as long as they aren't top 10 picks. If they are it better just be the 2 picks and not 4.
I am okay with the risk of giving draft picks up for Doughty, in fact I think it is the best thing we can give up for him.
Players like Doughty don't come around every draft year. Its not normal for a 21 year old dman to be arguably the best dman on a gold winning Olympic team.
Two first rounders + is not a lot if they are not in the top three of the draft position and even if they are it does not mean that player is going to develop into a drew doughty talent... We get proven elite talent out of the deal and they get potential talent that may not ever develop into the same level.

If your logic involves the potential that there is a player better than doughty to be had in the draft. Well...I think you'd stop right there. No offer sheet in my books.
On second thought....I think an offer sheet of 4mil/2years....if that is even possible....would be a huge punch in the face to DL.
Doughty won't accept. So there wouldn't be any punching. And Lombardi would match and even say "Thank You Edmonton for being dumb enough to try to sign him to such a low contract"

i thought doughty wants a short term to test UFA? Clearly DL would match, he would just whine about it.
Honestly in the next two drafts there is probably no defenceman in junior that will end up being as good as Doughty and the only two forwards that should be better then him will probably be Yakupov and Mackinnon. With Doughty the Oilers probably draft between 10-16 in 2013 and 15-22 in 2014. Offer him 7.4 a season for 10 seasons, Kings will probably match it anyways.

He wants a short term contract with an upwards of 5-6M. I doubt he takes it. I wouldn't take it even when LA was gonna give me 7M+ to stay a little longer.
Lombardi would throw a hissy fit, but he'd have to match basically any OS.
If he doesn't, I think he'd basically be fired because the Kings ownership is expecting big things this season after spending a ton of money on Richards, and without Doughty (and just the promise of future picks) they're probably out in the first round or second round.
