Lehtinen-Koivu-Peltonen played together in three tournaments I believe (1994 Olympics, 1994 Worlds and 1995 Worlds) and they played unbelievable well together. I guess some journalist or play-by-play guy thought they needed nickname and called them that.
Or actually they were called Hupu, Tupu ja Lupu as those are the Finnish names of Donald Duck's nephews.
I don't think there's any specific reason for their nicknames. I don't remember. It has been already ten years since that line first played together and although I have a very good memory it is just too short. If I tried to rationalize those nicknames I'd say that Huey, Dewey and Louie work very well together too. Yeah, I think so too. Better leave rationalization to someone else
There has also been Teletubby line in Team Finland and HPK Hameenlinna of the Finnish league. Dallas Stars' Niko Kapanen is the only one of those Teletubbies who have played regularly in the NHL.
Yeah, better stop right now.
PS. Someone who said something about Larry Hagman. It is not Sue Helen. It's Sue Ellen.
(No offence but I'm just trying to get people forget my rationalization. Don't tell anyone, thanks. But she really was Sue Ellen.)
PPS. Sam Losco might be correct too but I haven't checked that one.
