I work at the Forks. I'll probably book some time off, so I can either a) leave work early and avoid all the traffic before the party starts, or (b) leave work early and get drunk with all of the other Jets fans. Hmmm, tough call.
Like 'em or hate 'em, Nickelback is a multinational superstar band. Their record and concert sales speak for themselves.
We in Canada are extremely self depreciating when it comes to our biggest musical exports, but outside of Canada, Nickelback is a well liked band.
**Disclaimer: I am not a Nickelback fan, though whenever one of their songs come on I find myself unwillingly singing along.
I agree with everythign in this post . I'd love the Hip too, but the NHL needs a band with name recognition in the states as well. And Nickleback offers more of that the most every other rock band from Canada.
Everyone should remember that Nickelback is pure speculation. Also the article states "musical acts". With numerous bands and all the other festivities, a real fan will be at the forks no matter who plays.
How is Nickelback an embarrassment? They're one of the biggest groups to come out of Canada! Admittedly, I was not a fan until I went to one of their live shows, it was awesome. "Good music" is a very subjective term. I mean I like Pearl Jam, Zeppelin, Metallica, The Beatles and Nickelback too...it is possible to like all of those groups, each does not have a mutually exclusive fan base.
Record sales, and concert attendance speaks for itself.
Celine Dion and Justin Bieber have fans too. But for the most part those 3 acts make up the trifecta of Canadian embarrassment.
Actually booing them offstage would be pretty awesome however! Hmmmmm....
It's funny you say that, considering those may be 3 of the biggest grossing and most well known Canadian acts internationally.
I'm not saying I like any of them, I'm just saying they have star power.
I am a bit of a cheerleader for Canadian music anyway, because most Music Directors in Canadian radio loathe it and our Can Con rules.
I feel like a good song is a good song, regardless of who the artist is and where they are from. I like songs from Nickelback, Metallica, Justin Bieber, N'Sync, The New Pornographers, The Beatles, Tchaikovsky, Madonna, Old Dirty *******, Billy Talent, Prozzak, Weezer, Rush, Iron Maiden, and on and on and on.
I just think some people are music snobs (not directing that at anyone specific).
At any rate, I have taken this thread completely off the rails and for that I apologise.
The internet has made Nickelback an embarrassment. To the point where they have become a meme for back music. There are several youtube videos that play two Nickelback songs at the same time to show you how similar they are to each other.
That being said, they do not deserve the horrible reputation they have. There are MUCH worse bands out there and I was once a fan of their music. Not so much their new stuff.
I won't be making my decision on attendance based on who the acts are.
This is a once in a lifetime party for the start of the NHL season with thousands of Jets/NHL fans in attendance and we'll probably even some good swag from all the sponsers in town. We'll also get to show the hockey world once again that we're absolutely crazy about the Jets returning when the live hits from Versus, CBC and the NHL Network show party.
This is the only year the Jets will ever come back to Winnipeg and it'll be the only year in my lifetime that the NHL throws their season opening bash in my backyard. I don't care if Celine Dion and the Biebs are lip synching duets all night, if I can go I'll go.
