Training Camp Cuts

The first round of cuts were made today.

Zach Yuen, Adam Lowry, Austen Brassard, Ivan Telegin, Sebastian Owuya and Kendall McFaull are all headed back to junior.

Mike Kirkpatrick was assigned to St. John's and Levko Koper was released and is heading to University of Alberta.

I'd expect the next round to come on Sunday or Monday. They will need to keep a few extra bodies around with three games in three nights Sat/Sun/Mon.

I think the next ones will come after the game in St. John's on Monday. Probably down to maybe 30 or so before final cuts.

He is, but almost forgot. Didn't dress for either game on Tuesday, and I've heard very little about him.

Surprised that Levko koper didn't earn a contract AHL-ECHL.

I was very surprised about this as well. They may have had an arrangement to release him if he wasn't going to get a shot at the parent club.

Yeah, I have to think this is true.

He's going to the University of Alberta to play for the Golden Bears, so maybe he told the team that wanted to pursue his education if he didn't make the big team.

Unlikely that it was dependant on a shot at the big team, Koper was never going to be close. It was probably whether he had a shot at an NHL contract.

Here's the thing, Koper, as a WHL grad, gets a Canadian University scholarship for every year he plays in the WHL. For him, that is 5 years of free school. But he forfeits this the second he signs a pro contract, whether that be NHL, AHL, ECHL, KHL, Swedish Div 3, or the Australian Hockey League (not the right name but they do have a pro league ).

An NHL deal with the potential to be called up and a 3 year commitment for an ELC is worth giving this up for (for U of A this scholarship is worth about 6-8 thousand yearly, 30 or 40 thousand altogether).

For an AHL deal, which would be one year, would probably not be worth much more if anymore than that. You could be sent to ECHL and released and then in one year you have basically nothing.

I believe it was Koper's choice to go back to school so they gave him the release. Good choice IMO.

I wasn't that impressed with Telegin, but i though he'd make it through one more round of cuts.

I was hoping Kirkpatrick would have a slightly better showing. He was on a stacked team in juniors, but I was hoping some of it had to do with him and just went a little unnoticed.

No surprises, except for maybe Koper not getting a contract.

Agreed. I didn't expect him to make the final roster though so I guess it doesn't matter in the end.

I'll make this prediction... when the Jets play Ottawa on Monday, some players won't get a plane ticket back to Winnipeg, they'll be staying in St John's.

Postma to be a very late cut... OR he makes the team? Festerling is looking like a strong d-man as well. If things work out, the Jets will have d-men in spades! It's crazy!

I think after the weekend they will go down quite a bit. Down to 30ish. Much will depend how some of these guys play this weekend, since a bunch of them have not played yet, but I'll say...

Holzapfel, Meech, Weller, Sol, Aliu, Clark, Gagnon, Koci, Carrozzi, O'Dell, Forney, Chiarot, Melchiori, Pasquale, Flood, Jaffray, Redmond, Ramsey

are all gone for sure next cuts, IMO, which will be next Tuesday.

But after years of following Kings camps I know there is always lots of surprises.

And King Salamon, they said on TSN-Jets on Tuesday that they will be splitting the team again, half will go to Nashville, half to Carolina and then the Nashville half will be going to St. John's.

Which makes me think that most (maybe a large %) of the team that goes to Nashville and St John's will be AHL players? Just a hunch.

Makes you wonder what is going through the young players minds right now eh?

St. John's will need to have the makings of team by Tuesday when their training camp opens. They also have pre-season games scheduled against Norfolk next Thursday, Friday and the Sunday after that.

I'm thinking there will be lots of cuts by the Jets by Monday at the latest. All those left to play the next home games on Wednesday and Friday will be the core team and those few bubble players, which IMO might include Postma, Scheifele (?), Gregoire.

Postma will likely play back in Winnipeg next Wednesday for sure. I'm sure there will be a lot of fallout from Saturday and Sunday's games. Can't wait for those two... get the popcorn ready!

I think Postma is really giving the management ALOT to think about so far.

There will be alot of answers this weekend after Saturday and sunday's games... can't wait to watch them! Get the popcorn ready!

What I posted above was most of the roster it would leave WPG with only 6 extra FWDs, 3 extra D, and 2 extra G so 34 players(from a 23 man roster). Broken down it would leave WPG with depth chart something like this..

Ladd - Little - Wheeler
Kane - Burmistrov - Antropov
Maxwell - Wellwood - Thorburn
Cormier - Slater - Stapleton
McArdle - Scheifele - Machacek
Klingberg - Bodie - Glass
Gregoire - - Pesonen

Enstrom - Byfuglien
Hainsey - Bogosian
Stuart - Oduya
Kulda - Postma
Jones - Festerling

Pavelc
Mason
Aebischer
Mannino

Not sure WPG would want to go too much lower than that, but Pesonen, Gregoire, Bodie, Mannino and one of Kulda/Postma/Festerling might also be gone I guess so 29 players. This weekend is going to be huge for those decisions.

You have 34 players in your list. I think that is much higher than what will actually be left after Monday.

You have to remember that the Jets only have two pre-season games after that. My thinking is that the last 2 pre-season games will used to experiment with line combinations, defensive pairings and systems type things. And to assess those few bubble players that they just can't make their minds up about.

I'm predicting that Chevy and the coaching staff will be making some tough decisions after Monday and hack away.
