I'm seriously hoping the Jets can identify that Mason is not the answer for us as a backup and gives Aebeischer a shot. There are still games to be played but so far Mason just doesn't look like he can get the job done.

This.

I should have an article done on Bleacher Report after the game today on why Mason does not deserve the backup role.

The kid has some nice skill, if he stays heathy don't be surprised to see him near the top of St.Johns scoring list this year.

I mentioned a few weeks back that Mason may need to be replaced. It is just pre-season but he better pick it up or he will start in St.Johns.

Looking forward to it.

Despite arriving in Winnipeg in early August, saying all the right things since last May and having a pretty cool mask Mason does not seem capable of getting it done on the ice.

I'd like to see Mason and DA play the final two exhibition games at MTS Centre but Pavs may need to get some work in. It is an interesting battle to say the least.

Is TNSE willing to pay pay $1 850 000 for Mason to play in the AHL? or could he be moved or plucked off waivers?

It probably makes more business sense to have DA start in the AHL.

I say we give Pasquale a shot over Mason. In fact I wish we would have had Pasquale in for 1st and 2nd and Mason in for the third.

Yeah, Mason has not looked good in pre-season. But from listening to interviews from Noel, he has the utmost confidence in him. I really doubt we will see any move for another backup goaltender. Will probably have to wait until his contract runs out before we consider a new backup.

I agree Mason isn't the answer, been saying it since the team moved, but to those saying give Aebesher a shot lol. He is less worthy then Mason, Aebecher was never a good goalie imo, even in Colorado he inherited a solid team, and when the team got worse it showed by him not being able to win the games he needed to by himself, just watching him in net he seems awkward and unsure of himself.

I honestly don't know what the answer is in the backup roll, but I do know for this team to have a shot, pavy is gonna need to play close to 70 games..

I think Mason will most likely start the season as Pavelic's backup. If he continues to play poorly during the regular season, then he'll see time in the AHL. I think the Jets want to try to get as much value out of him as they can.

One guy who has stood out is Brett Festerling. They've talked about him in the last couple TSNJets broadcasts, but aside from that he is noticeable due to his physical play on the ice. I've really liked him.

I think at the end of the day here, my guess is we see guys like Maxwell, Machecek and possibly McArdle here to begin the season.

I'd throw a guess out there we see something similar to the following/What I'd personally like to see.

Ladd - Little - Wheeler
Kane - Burmistrov - Machecek
Maxwell - Wellwood - Antropov
Glass - Slater - Thorburn
McArdle

*Fehr - Recovering from Shoulder surgery.

Enstrom - Byfuglien
Hainsey - Bogosian
Stuart - Festerling/Oduya

Pavelec
Mason

I could live with that lineup, although I do like what I've seen of Postma.

It's awesome seeing Scheifele and Postma tied for points with Malkin in preseason. Haha.

I have been impressed with Gregoire in both of his appearances and with Meech who looked solid in Nashville. I wouldn't mind seeing both of these guys in the lineup, and it's not just because they're from Winnipeg

Great points. I've liked Gregoire from what I am seeing on tv. I think a year in the AHL will be great for him and next season he very well could be a real solid 3rd line winger for us. I feel strongly about him having a future with the organization sooner than later. His work ethic is great and his two-way game is pretty responsible, which is encouraging.

Meech I have to see more of, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him play a decent amount of games for the Jets this year if guys don't pan out or we get an injury or two. I think management like him.

I'm a bit worried about our backup goalie position. If something were to happen with Pavelic I don't have confidence in anyone else to get the job done. Mason looks shaky. Abs looks like a pure minor leaguer and Pasquale isn't ready for significant time yet.

Even if Pavelic is healthy, there's a minimum of 10 games he'll need to take off and I don't see us winning many.

I'm not too worried about guys like Antropov or Mason.

Sure, they've been a let down thus far during the pre-season, but I'm sure they'll turn it on during the actual season.

Overall, I'd roll with:

Ladd-Little-Wheeler
Kane-Burmistrov-Antropov
Stapleton-Maxwell-Wellwood
Glass-Slater-Thorburn
(Machacek, McArdle)

Bogosian-Enstrom
Byfuglien-Postma (wild prediction is that he makes the team out of camp)
Stuart-Oduya
(Hainsey, Jones)

Pavelec

Mason

Question for ATL fans: did Kane and Burmistrov ever play together last year? How did they look?

Hainsey will definitely be one of our top 4 d-men. He should be placed with either Bogo or Buff.

The is no way I see Hainsey not in the top 4. He's one of our best defensive defencemen.

Yeah Hainsey isn't a bubble player, he's an important guy here.

My prediction for the opening night line-up goes something like this ....

Ladd Little Wheeler

Kane Burmistrov Antropov

Cormier Wellwood Machacek

Bodie Slater Thorburn

Fehr *Injured

Glass *spare

Enstrom Byfuglien
Hainsey Bogosian
Stuart Oduya

Festerling

Pavelec
Mason

Once Fehr comes back, one of Bodie, Machacek or Glass will be sent down. Call it what you will, but I'm just not a big believer in Tanner Glass. I'd rather see Machacek up with the Jets because I think he has more scoring potential and I like the element that Bodie could bring when he's in the line-up.

I think there is a spot on this team for Festerling as the # 7 guy. Outside of any injuries, I think the only way we see Postma is if they'd find a taker for Oduya.

If Mason doesn't cut it, are there any viable options out there that could be had cheaply? Gerber? Leighton? Montoya? Are they even an upgrade on Mason? Hedberg would have been a nice pick up.

What makes you think Hanisey is a fringe guy? He is our 2nd best d-man defensively. Postma with Buff? Come on. Really? Postma can't cover Buff's mistakes. Those 2 together would set a record for worst combined +/-.

The way I see it, Buff, Bogosian and Enstrom are the clear cut top three.

There could be arguments made for any of Stuart, Oduya, Hainsey or even Postma to round out the top four.

IMO, Postma has been great this pre-season and based just on play alone, I'd take him over Hainsey or Oduya.
