Comparing lineups, Canucks should get schmucked. Who cares though. Nice to see hockey is back, though I would be much happier if we were coming in on a victorious note.

Weird thing to do if they do want to see Hodgson succeed.

Too bad I can't watch, I have night class in New West.

I'm interested in the following performances tonight:

Forwards

Hodgson - Interested in his skating speed after a full offseason of training. It's a shame he's on a helicopter line. I'm sure he'll get more servicable wingers in future games.

Mancari - Perhaps a dark horse for the 4th line role. Put up decent numbers in the AHL and has a beast of a shot, looking to see some good physical presence.

Archibald - Hoping he can continue his decent play in the prospects camp into main camp.

Nolan - Hoping he still has it, hopefully we'll see 18+ minutes from him over a few of the games. If he does well he'll be invaluable depth and can help out on the 2nd unit PP.

Defencemen

Ballard - A well documented dissapointing season. Not getting any 'special' treatment as a the rest of our top 4 dmen are (in being rested for this game). I hope he hits the ground running, if we have the Ballard that we thought we were getting when the trade happened last year it'll sure go some way to replacing Ehrhoff.

Parent - Looking to see some steady play, as a reclaimation project you would hope he makes it far in main camp. Will be hard pushed to make the roster for opening day, as he would have to beat out Rome and Tanev along with other players like Sulzer who have NHL/AHL tweeners.

It actually really pisses me off how they are setting Hodgson up to fail.

Once again, he is stuck playing with 4th liners, and the saddest thing is that they are anchoring that god-awful lineup.

I'd like to see him play with Sturm and Nolan or at least one player who can bury a nice pass.

It's going to be very hard for him to show anything tomorrow as he is literally the only guy that any Calgary player will have to worry about.

I guess all we can hope for tomorrow are some entertaining fights, cuz I certainly don't see us winning that game in Calgary.

I don't see us winning either game unless Schneider and Schroeder go bananas.

I also predict at least 27 out of 40 (68%) of the players from either game won't be in the line-up or the press box for game 1 of regular season.

Anybody wanna take me up on that?

I think the following bolded players will be on the roster for game 1:

Duco - Hodgson - Oreskovich
Dimitrakos - Longpre - Mancari
Archibald - Begin - Fedoruk
Anthony - Friesen - Grenier

Connauton - Eriksson
Sulzer - Corrado
Alberts - Erixon

Legace
Climie

Sturm - Ebbett - Nolan
Pinizzotto - Schroeder - Jensen
Volpatti - Schneider - Rodin
Clackson - Roussel - Tochkin

Ballard - Tanev
Sauve - Parent
Rome - Polasek

Schneider
Lack

I make that 9 of the line-ups making it to puck drop on the opening night.

I'd love to see Cody play with Sturm/Schroeder or any other skilled player... But I'm not too concerned because that won't be necessary right now for us to evaluate his biggest weakness, which was strength and weakness. His hockey sense is excellent, but once he can start skating and winning physical battles against NHLers, I'm willing to bet he'll be slotted on our 2nd line.

are those pre-season lineups or youngstars v2.0 + Ballard lol. Crazy how they can put together 2 sets of forwards and have noone in the lineup who started for the canucks last season there. The canucks defensive depth must not be what it used to be we are playing 4 defenseman who have played in the NHL!

Does Ballard playing in this game seem as an indication that he is going to have to fight even to get a starting roster spot at the start of the year?

Well, regulars such as Schneider, Rome and Alberts are all participating. Our proven guys (Sedins, Burrows, Kesler, Samuelsson, Hansen, Salo, Bieksa, Lui) or guys coming off injuries (Edler, Hamhuis, Manny) are given free pass probably. Would've expected to see Lapierre's name on that list, but meh.

MaxLap is possibly looked at as the safest bet for 4th line center as we speak, so maybe the coaching staff has faith in him.

I'm curious to see what some of the guys from rookie camp can keep going in main here. These young guys like KConn n Sauve have such potential, I'd like to see both contribute big tomorrow.

I thought if Connauton couldn't even play sound defense in the young stars games a week ago, he's definitely not NHL ready. Sauve as of what we've seen so far, is our 7/8 D at best.

To me it seems like the coaching staff really likes that Ballard - Tanev pairing (as do both of the players) so they're trying to get them playing together as much as possible. Nothing wrong with that, IMO. Ballard is a great influence on Tanev (as he has said himself a million times by now) and Tanev seems to compliment Ballard's game.

He missed all last season with an injury, so he'll be pretty far set back. A good season in the ECHL or AHL this year and perhaps he can turn it around in 12/13.

I had a random thought before falling asleep last night. Malhotra was drafted what 7th overall by the Rangers, fans and media thought he would develop into their number 1 or 2 centre. He had won everything in the OHL. I think John Mukler was his coach and he was being criticized by the media because in Malhotra's second year he was benched or played on the lower lines, and I believe Mukler then said something like Malhotra's not a top 6 player but a 3rd liner, a very good 3rd liner. Anyways and now we see and appreciate Malhotra for what he is, not a top end scorer like New York expected but a smart hockey player, good leader and a great face off man.
I'm wondering if we're doing the same thing with Cody Hodgson. Sometimes our expectations (which could very well be unrealistic) can cloud our judgment and we can miss the value of Cody for who he really is. I think non of us can doubt his hard work? His drive? His willingness to win? He has should that all through his OHL career and the especially this past summer. My expectation is that Cody will be a smart player and work hard to always improve! I want to be able to appreciate what Cody brings, not what I imagine him to bring! Anyways gotta get ready for work!

Poor CoHo, and man, does that lineup headed to Calgary suck.

Conversely, most of the prospects I'm interested in (minus Hodgson and 1 or 2 others) are playing in the game in Vancouver. I know on paper Calgary should smoke the holy hell out of the Canucks, but I seem to recall the same thing happening during last year's preseason and the Canucks put up a pretty good battle.

Can't wait to watch some hockey!

Be going to the game as I'm Calgary right now. Interested to see Hodgson play in that role. No excuse for not showing something in this game. I'll be looking for it.

Flames have a lot more vets in the line-up, as is normal at home. They did this last year too if I recall correctly. Their prospect pool is thin, but damn like organizations with 2 different ideas on tonight...
