Awesome!

But, does anyone know if/when Verizon is coming to Wayne, NJ? I have seen Verizon trucks doing work over the past year or so, but I don't know if it's for FiOS or even when it will be done.

in this case the FCC is protecting consumers against a cable monopoly(cablevision) that is abusing its market position. Cablevision lost its right to decide what it wants to do when it started abusing the market. The FCC is well within its rights and mandate to put a stop to it.
No, you haven't read all my posts. I believe in government regulation. I don't believe it should get to pick and choose though, when it applies its rules and in what form.
I still contend the FCC decision had nothing to do with consumers, and everything to do with the power and influence of telecom giants like verizon.
If you can't see the corruption and politicizing taking place in government agencies like the FCC, you'll never understand the position I have on this matter.
Yes, governemnt regulation is good, but there is a line that can be crossed where there is just to much government involvment.

They use their own money to replace poles, and are forced to allow cable companies to lease space at a crappy per pole rate set by the friggin government.

Also, the same thing can be said for copper lines. They don't last that long. There are a maximum number of splices that are allowed in the lines due to signal loss, so over time down trees and weathering make it so that long runs need to be upgraded. We also get government fees passed onto us from Verizon that we don't from Cablevision, all because Verizon is classified as a telecommunications company.
Your arguement just cuts off where you need it to.
Please go on to explain why Verizon and other Telecom companies pay government fees and taxes and local cable companies dont.
Does it have anything to do with government contracts that basically granted these telecom companies near monopolies for years? How about the subsidies these companies recieved for years? The Universal Service fund, how does that get divided and doled out?

And about verizons investment in poles. Verizon became a company in 1983, so according to your 40 yr lifespan of a pole, they haven't needed to replace even one yet, other than those damaged..
if the damaged happened during a storm, insurance covers it, a disaster, then the government ponies up, if i hit one whith my car, my insurance pays....you really dont get how protected these giant companies are....
but i guess they make their billions in spite of the government oppression on them and the vicious local cable monopolies.

Sue them...apparently everyone has the right to everything available.

Tell the FCC that consumers in your area are hurt by not having verizon...its lowering property values as compared to surrounding areas with verizon.

A quick little way for you to tell:
If Verizon is hanging fiber optic cable in your area, it will have an orange sleeve on it maybe 4"-6" long near the pole. It's not a very big cable either, much smaller than the old style copper lines, maybe 1/2"-3/4" inch in diameter. The cable company is normally the lowest lines on the pole, then Verizon is a couple feet higher, then the power company is at the top of the pole. Cable isn't always present, though.

If you're in an underground development, they usually run new utility boxes for the FiOS delivery (they're normally 3'-4' tall and look like a green boxy post type thing).

I know this stuff because I used to flag for Verizon line crews and splicers while I was on breaks during college (if I didn't have an internship lined up). I was doing electrical engineering, so I used to ask the guys I was working with alot of questions.

A follow up on my previous post. I can't edit while I'm at work since I keep getting logged off:

The splice box is also pretty distinctive.

I have it in queens. It doesn't appear on the guide, but if you imput the channel (578 for MSG, 580 for MSG+) you will be able to watch it. Boomer and Carton have never looked better before!!! It also appears we don't have the overflow channels, possibly will not get them at all, which for Islander/Devil fans can be an issue, as well as us when the Knicks get started.

Dude, I respect your informed opinion, whether I agree or not, but you're acting like a 2 year old with a post like this.

I had Cablevision for a while but i changed because Verizon has a better all around service, in my opinion, lower prices, better on demand, better menus, and yes, MGSHD coming to Verizon was a factor but not a sticking point. That is how a free market is supposed to operate. So look through the BS issues and the games, competition in the free market is what prevailed ultimately. If Cablevision wants its customers to stay, they should focus on their services instead of hampering other companies' services.

Up and running in Rockland County as well. As far as the overflow channels go, there have been times where the Rangers were relegated to the overflow channels. I'm wondering if CV does more of this with the Knicks and Rangers now. I'd think the Rangers and Knicks are the most watched teams on the network and they'd be "punishing" the most viewers by doing this. Having the overflow channels in SD will have to do for now.

Also, the crux of the issue here is that Cablevision is acting as a content provider. They proceed to try and manipulate the market by selling the feed to some companies and not others. That is where they have a problem. If they wanted to keep the feed all to themselves and not sell it to anyone, they absolutely have the right to do that. They can't, however, do what they tried to do: sell the feed to companies like Time Warner and DirecTV, and not Verizon. They won't do that, however, because there would be a riot by NYR, NYI, and NJD fans that have those services. Time Warner and Cablevision have already split up their areas, so they don't directly compete with each other, and satellite service is the only option for some people out in the boondocks. Add into the equation that both those companies have far more established customer bases than FiOS, and it becomes easy to see why Cablevision was leaving them alone, yet targeting Verizon.

I have it on channel 578 in Monmouth County, NJ...however the picture looks a little weaker than most HD channels, not significantly - but you can see a difference.

MSG HD looks a bit weaker than most HD channels on Cablevision as well. It's Cablevision compressing the signal. Verizon can't really do anything about that. They broadcast what they receive. They aren't doing any additional compressing. At least they didn't in the past. Don't know if this has changed recently.

As soon as I said that it got a little bit better - what I was commenting on may have been a result of Boomer & Carton's feed. It had looked a little grainy but in the last 20 minutes the picture improved.

578 & 580 up and running in Williamsburg.

BTW, anyone know of a map that shows FiOS coverage in the city? Thinking of moving again next year and I do NOT want to go back to CV...

DDD if you agree with his statement (which I also agree with) we could all agree that Cablevision would not need to withhold MSGHD from Verizon & AT&T because there would be no mass exodus from CV if the rest of their product/service was up to date with current standards.... Cablevision would be able to profit from selling the HD feeds to those companies and still retain their Customer base as many Customers are usually complacent with sticking with what has worked in the past and usually aren't looking to make changes to their services for no reasons other than customer dissatisfaction.

MSG HD runs at 17.5 MB, which apparently makes it the highest quality regional sports channel in the country.. So the picture should be about as good as it gets assuming it is being filmed on high quality cameras (which the games are).. Not sure what they use for Boomer and Carton
