I don't think they're part of the game anymore... unless the criterias changed. I know that in NHL11, franchise players were mostly 81+ overall and had at least B- potential while not being one-dimensional defensively. In NHL12, I drafted Nathan MacKinnon at 86 overall at A B B... and he wasn't a "franchise player" during the draft.

Really? I never saw him in 2013 or 2014 (had 1st overall both drafts)

Forgot to mentionned that I created him.
I will try one day, just for fun, if a 99 overall player is rated as a franchise player - if nobody tries it before me.
Just drafted a Franchise player 1st overall in the 2015 draft. He is a center, He is an 84 B- B- C potential
He led me in scoring with 44 goals on my top line rw playing with Kesler and Hall
I realized the only way to actually find franchise guys is by scouting the same area for like 18 weeks.. if you dont do that itll just say top 5. I'm almost done my 25 year be a gm, found about 4 so far. None end up great.. 85ish overall with C potential.

on mine i just tanked and hapended to find a franchise guy
Just drafted my second one.
He's a power forward left winger named Phil Stokes.
Came out of the draft 87 overall with B B- B potential.
This guy is huge - 6'5, 247 lbs.
How often do you find them!? Do they always show up or do you need to scout enough?
I've played like 4 or 5 GM games each of them lasting at least 5 years, and have yet to run into a franchise player.

Bump.
Update on Phil Stokes! I'm in 2023-2024, and he's 97 overall, pretty sure he's C C C now. Now that's a franchise player.
Ian Holden, well, you could say he busted. I kept him for 4 years, but he only got up to 85 by then, C- B B for potential, so i packaged him with picks for Taylor Hall. Also, got another franchise guy. In 2021 draft, he's a centre named Arthur Wild. This was an interesting case because he went 2nd overall. 1st overall was a Swedish Dman who is currently 78 A-. Wild is currently 88, B- C B-. Better than Holden, for sure. Also, here's a funny story: When I drafted Holden, next pick was an American D-man named Jordan Tanabe. 4 seasons after the draft, Holden is busting, and Tanabe is, wait for it:
85 OVR., A A- A potential
85 A overall and he's NOT the franchise guy?!?
Oh well, I traded Simon Savard (90 B- C C defenceman) for him
My brother found the first franchise goalie since they started them in the NHL series GM mode.
He went 1st overall. 87 overall. B- potential.
By his 5th year in the league, he went to 97 overall with C potential
He won 2 Hart trophies already, and rightfully so. Had one season of an astonishing 1.25 GAA and a 96% save percentage. My brother won the cup with him in his 4th season and only lost 2 games in the entire postseason thanks to this dude. He now has 99 in speeds and reactions. It's impossible to score a cheese goal on him
