haha I know. And lo and behold, I have one in the 2015 draft! Andrew Weiss. Plays D somewhere in the WHL. I'll keep my eye on this kid... maybe pull a crazy draft day trade for that 1st overall.
Nice, never found a franchise D(or goalie, that would be nice).
Also, how old were the franchise players that you drafted? The guys I both drafted were 20. Aren't they supposed to be 18/19 year olds. No franchise player gets drafted at 20 years old. That's like drafting Crosby or Ovechkin at 20. And you know what else sucks? There is never any right-handed D-men in the top 10 ever. I hate having two left handed d-men on pair. The only time I get a good RH d-man is in a late round and he turns out to be a gem.

How often do you find them!? Do they always show up or do you need to scout enough?
I've played like 4 or 5 GM games each of them lasting at least 5 years, and have yet to run into a franchise player.
The first 4 or 5 years, you won't find one - simply because most of the main players drafted are already in the game's database (although an updated Yakupov and MacKinnen are pretty darn close to franchise players).
Beyond that, it's random - pretty much when the game engine wants to generate one; for example - the 2018 draft for me, might be very deep and full of Dmen, but for you the 2018 draft might be weak and only have a few notable forwards.
Scouting definitely helps - it's always a good idea to scout out the top rated guys for 6 weeks at a time. However, much like in real life, you don't need a brilliant, highly paid scouting team in order to determine whether certain players are franchise players (ie. Was there a team that didn't think Crosby or Malkin or Ovechkin weren't going to be superstars? Of course not).

You can't find a right handed Dmen early, but find them later and they turn out to be gems?
I find a hard time understanding what the problem is with that.... lol.
And yeah - I don't understand the age either. In NHL 11 (I've yet to find one in 12), I drafted a franchise guy who was 20 years old.
It's kind of like they were ignored during the 3 previous years of draft eligibility, but suddenly became gods
That reminds me... I drafted an 18 year old named Jukka Sorensen in the 7th round, 204th overall who's a 70 (B-/B-/A-). I'm unsure of how good he could get, but I'm excited to see how he turns out.

He will turn into a pretty decent secondary player, but those B- potentials will prevent him from being a superstar.
Not a bad pick up at all for the 7th round though; any time you can get someone in the 7th round for B- potential I consider it a steal.

I mean that I only find like one gem every 5 years, but it would be nice to get a RH d-man in the top 10 instead of wasting a pick on a LH D-man in which I'm stacked at.
I've never gone more than 2 seasons in Be A GM mode and never gotten franchise players but this thread makes me want to do a complete rebuild and go 10 years into a dynasty and get a franchise player. So im gonna try it with Calgary or Anaheim or Columbus etc. (thoughts on who I should choose?). Ex: Calgary trade Iginla and Kipper for picks and prospects and start from there. I think I will play one game then sim one to make the seasons go faster(playing 41, simming 41, 5 min periods), or do you guys play every game? I'd appreciate any other advice. Sorry I know this is off topic
You should not play any games...or you will get tired of your be a gm after 5 games. Just sim the whole season and if you make the playoffs just play some games

And does anyone know how to check the player's overall rating in the prospect game? There is going to be another franchise player and I want to see if I could trade up to get him. And he is 20 years old again.

You can't do that for some reason.
Oh well, just get him and tell us the results!
I know I made this for NHL 12, but for the first time in either 11 or 12, I got a franchise player.
I decided to flip in NHL 11 for nostaliga's sake. My custom team, the Ottawa Jets (Made before Winnipeg came back) cruised into another playoffs. We lost in round 2 to anaheim, largely due to the fact that, despite beastly offence (led by Kyle Turris(92) Tyler Ennis(89) Sean Couturier(88) Nicklas Seidenberg(87) Sebastian Abstreitter(87) and defence (led by Jared Cowen(94) Erik Karlsson(89) Brandon Gormley(87) my goalies stank (Mikko Koskinen and Maxime Clermont).
So, decided I'd sim to the draft. Well, after checking the final rankings, I noticed, a franchise player!! He is a defenceman named Lance Goehring. He is 6'5, 210 lbs. and has some pretty good strengths: 99 Slapshot, 95 Acceleration and Speed, and 90 Strength. I was hectic in trying to get 1st overall, but remebered the draft picks in rounds 4-7 have good value. So, I flipped 27th overall, as well as 5th and 6th rounders for the pick. Without question, I took Goehring.
He came out of the draft very solid - 88 overall, with B- C B- potential.
Yes, but get Justin Kea in the 2012 draft if you have a top 5 draft pick. He's like a franchise center. And get Thrower in round 5. He becomes a mid 90's overall player later on.
Have yet to find one in 4 seasons so far... Need to scout more.
It's not even the scouting you need to do. On September 17th, check out the "scouting report" to see what the player projections are. That is how the prospects will turn out at the draft. It'll say "franchise" if you get one.
