#7 Defenseman in Boston

Coach Julien spoke about the battle for the #7 defenseman spot in the Herald:

“Steven (Kampfer) was here, and Matt (Bartkowski) was here last year, and they certainly have a little bit of edge in that regards,” Julien said. “But we’ve still got (Zach) McKelvie. I think he’s done a fabulous job for a guy that hadn’t played in a couple of years (while serving in the U.S. Army), and we’re kind of monitoring his progression here as we go along. Colby Cohen is another guy who has good size and maybe is not the extreme physical player, but certainly (is) a guy that moves the puck extremely well. David (Warsofsky) is another guy that maybe size-wise, (is) not big, but his mobility is extremely good and he can move the puck well. So (there are) a lot of guys still that we’re looking at.

“Those guys are all young players, they’re also easy guys to bring in and send back without the waivers, so it doesn’t mean necessarily that it only has to be one guy that’s the seventh (defenseman); it could be, but it doesn’t mean it has to be.”

Who will start the season in that role?

I have the sense that Bartkowski has the best shot but was intrigued by Coach Juliens's comnent on McKelvie. How did he look to those of you who have seen a lot of him at camp?

McKelvie's skating is is very impressive ... Needs to make better decisions with the puck, but that could be rust from not playing the game for 2 years. I don't see him jumping right into a role in Boston, especially since he needs to play right now and not sit, but the way he's performed has been a pleasant surprise. I could easily see him rediscovering his puckhandling game in Providence and being the first/second callup should we lose a couple guys to injury.

I think the "7th spot" is going to come down to Kampfer and Warsofsky, with Kampfer prevailing.

I think it will be Steve Kampfer but isn't it nice to have several players that would work out ?

The P. Bruins are looking pretty good IMO.

What makes you think that *any* of them, let alone several would work out? I don't think we're exactly over-stocked on D.

The numbers we have gives us a choice.

Maybe they'll sign Shane Hnidy.

IMO Several of the rookies looked pretty good. We are talking about the 7th dman here not Chara's replacement.

Exactly, the great thing about this is the internal competition that insists the player who finally earns that 7th spot is deserving.

Man, only a few short years ago I couldn`t think of any player who was going to be pushed for their NHL spot, now there is solid competition up and down the roster, not tons of spots available but with the kids coming along, those already playing can`t just mail it in during the pre-season. Beautiful problems to have

I can't imagine McKelvie is ready for the NHL game-skating well and fitting back into the game are two different things. I figure the AHL will help him get into the groove of playing.

I wasn't and still am not a huge fan of Bartkowski. I haven't really seen the pre season games, but in the NHL games he played in last year he left me rather underwhelmed.

I still think Kampfer is the most likely 7th D-man, I think his 38 games NHL experience may also give him an edge when it comes down to figuring out who stays in Boston and who goes back to Providence.

Kampfer is the only one that will make the team.

The way Bartkowski has been playing I give him the spot over Kampfer. Kampfer hasn't done much in camp so unless he steps it up in the next 4 games he is in danger of going back.

...

Kampfer certainly has odds. He's already played in the NHL at fairly high level. I wouldn't bet against him at all.

But the guy who has impressed me the most in the small amount of time I've been able to watch, is Colby Cohen. Big frame, solid skater... I've noticed some consistently sound positioning, smart reads and a pretty concise puck-moving game. Nothing flashy or exciting by any means, but I don't always want that from a #7 guy.

I don't think he'll be the lone survivor, but I haven't seen a lot of press or enthusiasm for him... and I've liked what I've seen.

Bartkowski will be the number 8 guy behind Kampfer, I expect PC to trade for a veteran depth guy at the deadline.

Looks like you didn't get the memo, Ladyfan. Let me fill you in.

There are three types of NHL player:

- Star
- Noble enforcer (Shawn Thornton)
- Garbage

Hope that clears things up.

Thanks ! I guess I thought the "team" should be made up of a different mix of players.

Some posters fail to see that you can not have all "star" players as the salary cap will not allow.

This thread is about the 7th dman ...I think there are a few players would fit in to that spot. My guess is Kampfer.

Whoever gets it will have to watch his back that's for sure. It is a great thing to have so many viable candidates for one position. CJ and staff will make the right decision.

Also, the odds that all six top guys make it through the season unscathed are astronomical. We'll probably see quite a bit of Kampfer and Bartkowski, and perhaps even Cohen or Warsofsky as well.

Based on preseason performance exclusively, I give it to Bartkowski, but if you compare how he played in the NHL vs how Kampfer played, I think it goes to Kampfer, with Cohen being third in line.

Warsofsky by the end of the year. IMO the best out of the bunch.

Kampfer will probably start, and deservedly so. He was with the big boys last year.
Bartowski has left me unimpressed both in the preseason and last year when he played with the Bs.

Mckelvie has looked pretty good so far as well. He has been a big surprise.

Bartkowski has had the best camp but that doesn't translate into NHL success automatically , they don't need a #7 unless they're on the road, so chances are it will be by committee or a waiver line pick up since they have some cap room

McKelvie so far is a great story, have a feeling he'll be sending one of our draft picks to the ECHL

Kampfer to start but I want him playing in providence not sitting in the press box - if you're going to sit a 7th dman, make it a vet with little future in the organization

Warsofsky will surpass Kampfer in the long run methinks

Kampfer or Bart. I would make Kampfer re-earn a spot again though. I think Bart has outplayed him so far. There is next to no chance the BU boys make it in IMO. Its very rare for a college dman to go straight from college to the NHL. I am pullin for McKelvie, but he isn't ready. Would be great if he can eventually help the team. There is strong and then there is army strong .

I think they will only keep the one 7th D who I think is most likely going to be Kampfer. But given that it is the 7th D spot and all these young men are on a two way, they may opt to keep Bartkowski if he earns the spot in camp.

I think the Bruins were rather blessed last year in the injury department but there were still some games where they had to pull an 8th d-man up. I can't imagine there won't be some opportunities for whoever is close but doesn't make the team to get a chance in a game or two.

Should be Cohen hes a hero around here. That goal against Miami was phenomenal.

But really Bart has looked the best out of the group.
