MJ can set up such a shots because of his speed. He should play with OV. Meshing with Knuble very good I think.

Can't say the same about Semin and MJ/Knuble.

I sure hope Green isn't gonna play this lax all year. He's been the only weak link for the Caps IMO. So silky-smooth, so skillful...so damn clumsy.

He has that annoying radio voice, but yeah, he's good. Much rather listen to Joe Beninati though.

Anybody still against Hamrlik-Wideman down a goal late in the game?

That makes sense now. I had no clue that was the jumbotron feed.

I think the addition of Wideman has been completely overlooked here. Hamrlik adds another vet D who is extremely skilled. I expect both guys to make some blunders and take their share of some criticism on bad nights, but our blueline SKILL with those two added, has gone up by leaps and bounds.

i disagree. using your premier scoring forward on the point is the exception, not the rule. there are plenty of superstars who are plenty effective along the half-boards on PP, including Stamkos and Malkin. it's not because opposing teams are any less worried about them than they are about Ovie.

and there are obvious problems with having #8 on point -- he uses too much gas going back to fetch the puck on each clear, and he is less sound defensively along the blue line than a D-man.

all of which i would disregard if the PP had been effective last year, but it wasn't. it dropped from league-high 25 percent in 2009-10 to 17th in league, at 17 percent, last year.

i would use Ovie along half-boards.

i was one of the guys last fall who thought Knuble looked old, slow and totally ineffective. however, it's not true to say that he 'didn't catch fire until near the end of the season.'

he was solid from december onward. he scored 5 goals in december, and another 4 in february. (and he scored in the Winter Classic too, god bless him.)

anyway, i'm amazed by the guy. you watch him skate, and he seems very slow and limited. but he does manage to make the most of his chances. scoring 24 goals last year, at his age, on that team, was no mean feat. his 24 was 3rd on the team, behind Ovie's 32 and Semin's 28.

* Malkin plays the point.

* Stamkos plays in a 3 pt umbrella where he is often positioned in the same places on the ice as Ovechkin on the point.

The umbrella rotates a lot, they always do. They also spread the points out at times to regain control in a more traditional setup.

the point being....You can put 8 anywhere out there and he can be effective. The notion that he has to be at the point is incorrect IMO.
