Murph is hearing both Rome and Pinizzotto likely out for a month with their respective maladies. Expects AV to update after practice today.

With all of Mike Gillis' implementations to improve the team, isn't it about time to hire a shaman/witchdoctor to remove the hex on the Canucks?

Maybe it was a dream, but wasn't there a fan that did this last year or the year before...? If so, it seems to have had the reverse effect.

We've always had bad luck with injuries but you'd think that the worm would turn eventually.

I think most of this thread is a shining example of why you don't want your vets playing a ton of preseason games.

Rough news for 4th line hopeful Byron Bitz. He needed his fourth surgical procedure in a year (hip). Out of the picture for the near future

Hopefully this pushes Gillis to aquiring a waived 4th liner or perhaps signing Winchester. Pretty obvious he's gonna have to trade off a contract or two.

Bitz looks like a nice waste of cap space about now. I guess the idea of the team actually having cap space and not using LTIR to stay compliant all year was just fantasy.

damnit.
I hope Winchester gets cut so he can sign on here. Otherwise our 4th line isn't any better than it was late last year.

It is better. Last year Bolduc was the 4th line centre. Now it's Lapiere... Who has 3rd line skating and skill.

Volpatti Lapiere oreskovich ( or something like that ) is better then glass Bolduc ... Etc

This. Lapierre gives the fourth line an instant shot in the arm. Oreskovich was decent at times. Insert third man and it's still way, way, way better than the crud we iced last year.

Why would Bitz count against the cap if he's on a two way contract?

Why does everyone here have such a hard-on for Brad Winchester? I've never seen so much hope expended on such a mediocre player.

Because he hasn't been loaned to the AHL yet. He's making an NHL salary and counting against the cap until he's waived and sent to the Wolves, but that can't happen until he's medically cleared to play. It's the same reason Baumgartner's going to be having a $525K cap hit for the Canucks for the next while as well.

Basically Bitz is going to count against the Canucks' cap until he's able to play. If he's done for another year, then the Canucks simply have $700K in dead cap space. Obviously they can use LTIR, but that means they won't be able to save up any space for the deadline.

So financially these career AHLers/bubble NHLers on two way contracts are better off getting hurt? Hmm..

Yep. Breaking his foot right before last year's trade deadline earned Lee Sweatt about $150,000 more in salary than he would have made if he'd been sent back to the AHL (that injury basically doubled his salary for last year).

Bolduc has also been a huge beneficiery of that rule in the past as well. In 09-10 he spent 149 days on the Canucks' roster, and was injured for about 120 of them. He probably made $300K in additional salary that year due to injuries (I guess that made that fight with Scott worth it). Bolduc actually made more NHL money per game played in 09-10 than Kesler or Burrows did that year.

That was really dumb of Bolduc to fight Scott - or was it?

It is a bummer and a dumb rule on the lost cap space - That $1M of cap space gone is $1M less of banked cap space that could have been used to go over the cap at the TD.
