As A GM What Would You Do with Drew?

If you were Dean, what would you do with the current Drew situation?

a - Pay what Drew wants $7,000,000 minimum for 5 years.

b - Let him sit until he signs.

c - Trade him.

I LOVE DD. Who doesn't? He might be the best player as a "D" who ever played the game. However, I don't want at the same time a player who does what he is doing.... it sends a different, negative message about what type of player he is.... Great as he is.... his actions protrays him as NOT A TEAM PLAYER. And it's all about him. To me him saying he loves LA since he was a kid is a lot of CRAP! Because if he really does he would have signed a $6.8 million a season. It's only a $200,000 difference.

That being said.... my take...

TRADE HIM.

I would go with "B". We don't have all of the facts on what Drew is asking for.

No way do you trade him before the draft. Most of the teams have their rosters set right now and you wouldn't get as much as you could at the next draft.

If he holds out of the year, you trade him.

Option B. The owners have your back, most fans agree with you, and your doing what's best for the long term future of the team. If Doughty sits out the whole year, you look to trade him in the offseason, before the draft

Yeah I agree, just surprised being that he's such a so called huge Kings fan, you'd figure he'd sign by now. Now correct me if im wrong, he wants a shorter term contracts so he can test the UFA market too. Again so much for growing up a Kings fan right. Definitely disappointed he's acting in this manner, if the absolute best trade offer comes along, I agree see ya!

I understand. I agree with you to a point. That's a GOOD OPTION TOO.

It's just that by the end of the day, it is after all Doughty's choice. The agent is just the agent.

I would start three or four more threads about him in the trade rumors forum. The ten threads aren't enough.

I think what I heard is that he wants a 5 year deal. No more no less.

Some I heard from 4-6years they are willing but Dean is not.

edit: Neither both camps are open to a 1-3 year deals FOR NOW!

probably not popular opinion but A.
Toews, Kane, Stamkos, Malkin, Crosby, guess what they all have in common?
Should DD be making more than Kopitar? No but 6.8/7 years now isnt the same from 2 years ago due to the cap raise, so i can understnad why DD would be a little miffed at this "best proposal" being thrown around.

And, he never gets the 6-7 M in money lost back....I think Doughty's agent has lost his mind...but hey, it's an agent we are taling about...

Sit, and make no money is the best way to handle this, plus it send s a message to the rest of the prima-donna players and agents out there....

The issue with IMO is that those players you have named are all PROVEN players.

Secondly, being the 3rd or 4th highest paid defenseman ahead of Chara and Lidstrom who by the way just won AGAIN the Norris Trophy isn't enough at $6.8 million. And because of that Drew is annoyed somehow that he is being LOW BALLED?

Is that what you are saying?

Yep I also think it's all his agents doing. Read somewhere on the main board, can't remember where, that Luc told Kopitar to fire this same agent and go with someone else before he signed his contract. If that's true get rid of this @ss!

I'd ask myself the question of the century, why do we need so many Doughty threads?

He's pissed that Dean traded away Simmonds to Philly. He wants to hit the UFA market so he can sign with the Flyers.

1st-yea id sign him 5million for 1 year or 2 so that we can renegotiate properly - so i dunno if dean offered that type of deal but thats what i would do 1st

2nd-if not, tough luck and sit out the entire year

3rd-still nothing? trade! if mike richards can bring schenn & simmonds you will get really good talent to fill 2 holes in your roster (i.e. a LW and a D) and throw 7million at Parise come FA...

Option B

The guy wants money and he won't be getting it when he is sitting out. I would be confident that the Kings can still manage without him.

DTKF swears he's never buying another named jersey again. First O'sullivan, now Doughty. Great.

I'm almost ready to trade him but I think they need to have a few more conversations.

It has a few benefits.
1. It gives some time to clear your head before making a big decision.
2. I would go back and let him know that he will be put on block if he doesn't sign by a certain deadline ( I prefer to be honest with people when negotiating ). It will give him time to reflect and have a potential wake up call.
3. It allows a chance to get your best offer from other teams.
4, If DD is not going to sign, you might as well save $25k/day in costs.
