The Sabres have returned to practice here at First Niagara Center with what is essentially going to be their team for the 2011-12 season.

Here are today's lines:
Pominville-Adam-Vanek
Ennis-Leino-Stafford
Gerbe-Gaustad-Kaleta
Boyes-Ellis-McCormick

The defense pairs are Regehr-Myers, Weber-Sekera and Ehrhoff skating with Leopold and Gragnani.

I also think Pominville and Boyes won't be playing LW.

Not 'essentially' but almost, kind of, sorta, maybe, how the lines will look.

Until Lindy changes them after the first shift.

It's funny how so many of us predicted the defense pairings back in July...

Think of our lines as 1A/1B and 3A/3B. Because of wing depth it is looking like he will be on one of those 3X lines while getting PP time. He could just as well find himself on a top line with Vanek if an injury hits.

If you are going to leave Boyes with those guys, you might as well trade him. 4 million dollar players do not play the fourth line. Boo.

Well, why bother unless he's preventing the team from bringing in a better player. It's not like depth scoring ever hurt anyone and he's a pretty decent all-around player. McCormick-Hecht-Boyes can score points and have a strong forecheck.

The season opener in far-off Finland is Oct. 7 but the plane headed for their European adventure leaves Saturday, so training camp is essentially over for the Buffalo Sabres.

After taking Monday off, the team reconvened for practice Tuesday in First Niagara Center and it could have been any winter's morning.

There was just one practice group, rather than the three you need to survive a camp with 60-plus bodies. And there was a tidy total of 22 players on the ice: Four forward lines (plus Derek Roy skating in a non-contact role), seven defensemen and two goalies.

The Sabres will have a public scrimmage downtown tonight at 7. They practice Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings (and head to Washington for a game Friday night). Then they leave Saturday night for workouts in Mannheim, Germany and won't be back until Oct. 9.
Quote:
Forward and defense combinations appeared pretty close to what they figure to be for the regular season.

Luke Adam skated in Roy's spot between Thomas Vanek and Pominville. Ville Leino centered Tyler Ennis and Drew Stafford while Gaustad was between Nathan Gerbe and Patrick Kaleta. The fourth line had Matt Ellis centering Brad Boyes and Cody McCormick.
Quote:
"Players get more reps and the less numbers you have, you can go into more detail with what you want to work on," Ruff said. "We've kept the groups down to practice size but it's nice to get into four lines and more scrimmage-like and game-like situations."

I don't like those lines. Gerbe should be being centered Adam/Hecht and have Boyes on the other wing and let the Goonies McCormick-Goose-Kaleta play on a line. You'll have 3 lines of offense and a true checking line if you do that. And Ehrhoff and Leopold isn't a pair I like too much. Two offensive defensemen together? I'd much rather have Grags in there and take out sekera so leopold can play with like Weber...I think Grags is a little better defensively then Leopold
I'd like

Vanek-Roy-Pommer
Ennis-Leino-Staff
Gerbe-Adam/Hecht-Boyes
Cody-Goose-Kaleta

Chemistry. Considering how effective Gerbe-Gaustad-XXXXXX have been since the mid-point of last season and how well they played when Kaleta was the XXXXXX, it balances out the attack throughout and gives them a line that will be a matchup issue for many teams. All three play the body, two of them play a very direct "to the net" game, and the other has speed to burn. They've been arguably the best trio night-to-night in all the pre-season games.

This is wrong.

Grags is the 7th best Dman on the roster and in no way better than Leo defensively. Ehrhoff is in no way below avg defensively. The pairings are perfect IMO. Reg looked great on the PP in the preseason so I would expect him to get PP2 minutes with Leo

Grags is definitely not better than Leopold defensively right now, especially down around the net where Grags is a bit of a weak sister. Grags could be better defensively in transition but I'd say it's more a matter of that being close, whereas in their own end it's not close at all.

I dunno why someone would have a problem with Gerbe playing alongside Gaustad and Kaleta when they've been so successful together. They also dedicated most of the summer to playing together and becoming a true NHL line. Through that dedication alone they deserve the shot to play together.

I think we should use Hecht-Adam-Boyes as our 4th line or 3rd line whatever you wanna call it I don't see how putting a former 40 goal scorer with mcormick could work out that well

This Season's Predictions

A few from me:

-Luke Adam breaks out and becomes our 2nd line center. Leino proves that he cannot handle the center pivot and shifts to wing.

-Myers and Ehrhoff both score 50 points.

-Gerbe pots 25 goals.

What say you? Any predictions of your own?

Im with your predictions except I think Leino does well at center and Luke Adam has a tough time this season

Also:

- Vanek scores between 35-40 with the help of Ehrhoff on the PP
- Regehr makes the biggest impact of the new signings with the best +/- on the team
-Kaleta Gerbe and Gaustad all post big points for their standard and provide a great energy line
- Hecht and Boyes production both falls due to losing ice time because KGG get more
- Ennis feeds well off Leinos playmaking and ends up scoring quite a bit
- Roy has some injuries during the season and produces an average amount, Pommer scores less but produces more defensively
- and lastly my predictions on goals in order of our top 6 (no goal totals)
Vanek
Stafford
Ennis
Roy
Pommer
Leino

No, as the article explains, he was injured at the beginning of camp by Shaone Morrisonn and needed some stitches in his lip.
He was expected to start skating again by Monday but hasn't skated as of yet and could possibly miss the start of the season.
It could easily be PCS, as he missed the last 12 games of the season with a concussion.
See the injury thread for more on it, as there's been some more articles posted that cover it.
