Anyways, I think this is more than a lot of people were thinking, and it definitely is closer to what Kiprusoff wanted than what Sutter was supposedly offering. However, IF Kiprusoff can pick up where he left off last season, then I'd definitely be happy with him at $2.95 million over Cloutier at $3 million... That is definitely a hell of a reward for 38 regular season games. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the arbitrator supposed to ignore playoff performance? I'd guess this is because the players aren't paid to play in the playoffs (contractually speaking).
That just seems like way to much.....arbitration is definitely something that needs to be nixed or fixed in the new CBA. The guy didn't played less games (a significant amount less) than any other starter, in his first year as one...and he is rewarded that high? Ah well, Kipper will likely earn the money next season, and the Flames really do not have a choice other than to take it....but still....
Way too high. At least 500K to high. O well, just goes to show you what is wrong with the NHL today. Guys playing 1/2 season and then getting a 335% increase in pay.
Whoa... horrible award, not fair at all. Looks like the arbitrator followed the precedent of "What have you done for me lately" line of thinking when it comes to arb awards.
So let me get this straight; 39 games and a decent playoff run is enough to be considered a top 10 netminder, if not top 5 by some fans around here, but the same amount of games is way too low for him to make 2.95 million?
Just when you think that arbitration is getting back on the right track, something like this happens. I would also be in favor of just stopping arbitration but I don't know what a good alternative would be. It's really not fair that a guy can earn that much just for a good season and a very good playoffs, anyone remember Brian Boucher?

I think the Flames should trade Iginla. They could probably get a lot for him since his stock has never been higher. That will help them pay for Kipper. I can't imagine what else they could do unless Iginla is willing to take a pay cut.
The Flames payroll (while adding players like Ritchie, Weimer, etc) is now just a tad below 31 million with Kipper signed. That leaves justa bit over 6 million. To me it looks like Sutter will trade someone, liek gauts to free up 1.5ish million to allow Iginla to be signed for 7.5-8 million.

They'd never get a fair value return for Iginla because of his salary I'd guess.
Nevermind the fact that the public outcry in Calgary would be unimaginable if Iginla was to be dealt.
They just need to bite the bullet and get him under contract.
Say goodbye to Denis Gauthier or Toni Lydman though I'd guess. Especially with Iginla and possibly Phaneuf needing to be signed.

I believe only the Flame Hardcore have such high opinions of Kipper. I still remember the careers of Jim Carey & Blaine Lacher.

Is Philly still interested in Iginla? If anything the Flames team is built around defense and in 2-3 years they will have to chose which to keep. Iginla OR the core of Leopold, Regher, Phaneuf.

Seriously who are these arbitrators and what makes them so knowledgeable on the subject? Is it like jury duty and the people don't know better? Or are these arbitrators in the pocket of Goodenow?
Every now and then there are some pretty fair results, maybe it's the sides presenting compelling arguements to a knowledgeable person, while other times it seems very off.

If he keeps being money hungry, then yes....he'll be traded.

The Flames will have a strict budget of around 35-37 million (heard different numbers but all around that number). That means it leaves Iginla 4-6 million and he is worth more than 6 million.
