Shannahan already ruling with an Iron Fist

The NHL has suspended Flames forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond for four pre-season games and one regular season game for his actions in a game on Tuesday against Vancouver. Letourneau-Leblond received two minutes for boarding and a ten-minute misconduct in the third period of the game.

Philadelphia Flyers forward Jody Shelley has been suspended five pre-season games and five regular season games for his hit from behind on Darryl Boyce of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.

Shanny Explains the Suspension:

Shanny Sets up Video Review Dept in NYC to watch games just for suspendable offenses:

Hes already way ahead of the Clueless one when it comes to doing the right thing and keeping the fans informed...

I loved the video explanation. The video clearly shows and explains his case for suspension.

I'm watching the Pens Hawks game on the NHL Network and I could have sworn I heard that Shanny was going to have a video on the Shelley hit.

Love the fact that there will be an explanation. It helps us understand the ruling better.

Talk to me when a pittsburgh penguins player does something over the line and shanahan takes the same action. then i'll buy into his ruling with an iron fist.

thats a very big question in deed. hes made one ruling so far.

let me see a "superstar" or an "elite" player get the same suspension for a similar play and ill be impressed.
lets see what shanahan does when one of his friends and/or former teammates pulls a boneheaded stunt like shelly did.
lets see what shanahan does when someone from tampa does something stupid.

if he really watches the play--and not the players names--then and only then, will i be impressed.

remember the key in both of these suspensions was as he said himself.. PREVIOUS SUSPENSIONS were considered.. If a star player with no history does something, they will not be as long as these were just based on their history...

apparently shanny will do videos for highly questionable/controversial plays, but are non suspension situations as well explaining the rationale behind it and why it wasnt a suspension..

the tsn guys tonight said that this is all about transparency...

In the past that Shelley hit would've been no suspension, or maybe a game or two. It's what Campbell used to refer to as "a hockey play".

I think we're going to see a LOT more suspensions, and longer ones at that. I'll be interested to see the reaction here when an Islander gets a load of games.

But as others have said, consistency and transparency are key.

A friggin' breath of fresh air from the league. I'm still curious to see how consistent the rulings are throughout the season (especially going into and during the playoffs).

Agreed. The video explanations are nice and provide much-needed transparency to the decisions, but we're still talking about Shelley and a guy who couldn't make it as the Devils' enforcer. Those types of players always face suspensions.

the video explanations are interesting but ripe for over-scrutinization and will get Shanny in trouble with contradictions, sooner rather than later.

Trying to communicate and be transparent is a smart move, in theory, but the reality is, the job is SO subjective that the EXACT SAME video can be explained in many ways, to support any decision.

Big picture though. I don't believe harsher punishment will have much impact on how the game is played. Hockey is a really rough game at the NHL level. Players are rewarded for physical play and that line will get crossed all the time - only to be judged by others after the fact.

It's a little bit like punishing a UFC fighter for crossing the line.

It's pretty cool how he's explaining the thought process.. I wonder if they'll do the video explanations all season.

This can only help.

It will allow players to better understand the parameters they are playing with.
- This is the biggest issue I had with Campbell - I remember reading articles where GMs were baffled by his standards, so I can only imagine players had no idea where the lines were.

It will allow fans to understand the rationale behind decisions.
- Especially if they are all as clear as these first couple.

It will give the media nothing to make controversy over.
- The talking heads will have one less detrimental thing to talk about.

This is win-win for the sport, imo. Bravo, Shanny.

I agree, but he did leave himself wiggle room by allowing something like past suspension history to be factored in. My guess is that that played a big role in Shelley's suspension.
