Could someone please post the top ten single-season Goals-For marks for teams? I checked Hockey Reference, and they don't seem to have those kind of team records. NHL.com doesn't have anything prior to 1997-1998.
I know the 83-84 Oilers hold the record with 446, but how much of a dropoff is there after them? The most recent big number was the 09-10 Capitals, with 313.
'72 NY Rangers
'01 New Jersey
Most standard deviations above average:
'89 Los Angeles
'07 Buffalo (??)
One thing to remember about those Edmonton teams is that they were near the bottom of the league in terms of power play opportunities during those years. So they didn't get fat on the power play.
The same seems to be true for a lot of these teams (70s Habs and Bruins) - teams were terrified of giving them a power-play, so although they had a below-average number of opportunities, their excellent efficiency with the man-advantage led to a good number of PP goals. Even the Oilers were average or better in terms of the number of PP goals scored.
