The first ranger game I get to see in person. Even better, it´s only a ten minute walk from home. It will be a nice warmup before going to Stockholm next weekend! I´m bringing my girlfriend, who is a Frölunda supporter, my brother, who is devils supporter and my brothers girlfriend, who is just a common hockey fan. I will be very dissapoint if Rangers don´t win. Toxic frog all the way baby!

LGR!!!

Even though I doubt it, this is the last preseason game I get to see so hopefully they play a lot of the regulars again.

Actually, Nordic Vikings met Native Americans in Canada at least 492 years before the continental Europeans "discovered" the people on that continent. But nobody said to the natives that they were lost - so I guess using the word Indian is a gross misnomer as well (ie the Europeans "thought" they had found India, quite a wrong assumption it proved to be).
Using the word Indian is about as insulting and wrong an expression - esp when it is used by conquering Europeans - twds First Nations people as the n***** word is when used twds African Americans. So weird and wrong for a city in Sweden to adopt such a unfittingly terrible name with such horrific history when there are so many better and more suitable local ones. Even The Göteborg Volvos would´ve been a better name, only now Volvo has been bought up by the Chinese...

In the 80s, Frolunda and their home arena of Scandinavium was known as Vilda västern i.e. The Wild West due to their gun-and-gun style of offensive and physical hockey. Who were known to roam the Old West? Cowboys and Indians. Cowboys was deemed to "violent" in nature, so they went with Indians in '95.

No one actually calls them the Indians, though. It's really just a cheap marketing ploy.

A fan site and fan club for the team is called Wild West Support.

Hey, our old buddy Christian Backman is playing! This should be cake.

I wonder if Frolunda will do anything special for Henke before the game.

This is actually completely correct.

Still doesn't explain why their team name is the Indians seeing as there were no native americans in sweden. Vikings would've made more sense. Or anything else really that's related to sweden.

EDIT: never mind just read the explanation above from a fellow swedish poster.

As Systemfel wrote, Frölunda have since they made it to Sweden's premier league in the late early 60's been known as the Wild West, due to their original name Västra Frölunda (West Frölunda), their unprecedented way of acquiring big name players when they made it to the premier league, their financial difficulties, and also their style of play in the 70's and 80's.

The team also claim that it has to do with the history of the city; Gothenburg is Sweden's biggest port, and all swedes who emigrated to America during the 19th century left Sweden from Gothenburg. This made Gothenburg very influenced by American culture during this period.

Frölunda adapted the Indian in '95, during a period when almost all SEL teams started using NHL-style names and logos. Most teams dumped this after only a season or two, or never fully adopted the tradition, today only two teams remain with their 90's changes; Frölunda and Luleå. Frölunda were deeply in depth when they started using the Indian and quickly managed to save the club from bankruptcy, so even though many fans hate it they are still thankful for it, it's mostly there for the kids so that they'll buy merchandise. Officially the team is named Frölunda Hockey Club.

2 things:

PJ Axelsson is a 4th line player in the SEL now!?!

And, that is a GREAT story about the team name.

Yeah. Plays more than an NHL 4th liner though, averaging 13:27 per game this season. SEL coaches tend to roll four lines much more than their NHL counterparts.

He's ok...He might be better playing on the bigger ice surface in Sweden, especially having chemistry with his teamates. All I know is he played like 6-7 games with Dallas years ago and scored a few goals and had a few assists.

I think he had some injury problems in his last year in the NHL and then he had problems finding a 1-way deal in the NHL so he went home and is making more money. Makes total sense.

Really excited to see Tim Erixon play on the surface he is used to, and against the peers he played last season. With that said, Lets Go Rangers!
