ATT U-Verse Loses NHL Network

Don't know where else to put this and thought I'd chat about it with fellow sharks Fans.

Turned the TV on last night and it was still on NHL Network from Thursday's game and had a message about the channel not being available...

PROGRAMMING UPDATES

NHL NETWORK
We have tried to reach a fair, long-term deal with NHL Network in order to continue delivering this channel to U-verse TV U450 and Sports Tier customers. Unfortunately, it appears that as of midnight EST, Oct. 1, NHL Network will no longer be available on U-verse TV because we will no longer have an acceptable agreement to carry the channel. We are always open to considering a fair and detailed proposal from NHL Network.

U-verse TV customers can continue to watch their home team and other teams play on NBC, Versus or on their area’s local regional sports network. These networks are delivering over 100 games this season, which is more televised live NHL hockey games than ever before.

Copied from Sharks forum.

IIRC, they never had NHL Center Ice, so I never really considered them as a carrier (I'd stick with long term).

Well, I didn't get NHL Network anyway, so this doesn't hurt me, but still a major pain for the league and for its fans. At some point, I would like to get the NHL Network and Center Ice when I get a more stable job, but that's not looking very likely with AT&T Uverse any time soon.

Glad it happened this year and not last, when I had Uverse.

That would've really screwed me, as I bought the sports package for that and Fox Soccer, and there is no way I would spend $10 a month only for Fox Soccer.

I've written UVerse. I'm tired of their petty squabbles with content providers. Fix it.

What is so terrible about NHLn? seriously.

Where else in So Cal can you get full NHL coverage? Certainly not on FSN or Prime Ticket.

I think NHLn does a very good job.

I'm with you. If it has live hockey, it's a good channel. I don't care what else it has and I don't even mind seeing the same commercials 5,000x per season.

For a league as desperate for exposure as the NHL is, dicking around with any provider is short sighted and stupid.

I truly believe Gary Bettman can restore the NHL to what it once was; a 6 team league.

This is why you never sign a contract with a cable provider. Your only leverage as a customer is the ability to cancel your service. Maybe in this case you don't care enough, but you should never lose that right.

If this were happening later in the season I'd agree, but given the time of year and the fact that the NBA is locked out, the NHL has a bit of leverage here. They can afford to lose a bit of exposure (which is REALLY minimized considering serious fans are going online anyway) and let the pressure build on AT&T to buckle. As subscribers get more irritated, the backlash will be primarily against their carrier.

A lot of people I know are ditching cable and satellite television in favor of online providers, like Hulu and Gamecenter Live.

The NHL will see increased exposure via NBC. I'm willing to bet there weren't a whole lot of people who cared about NHLN in the first place.

Unfortunate for us hockey fans with U-verse. Thankfully, Versus/NBC Sports, has ramped up their coverage, so that will help short term. I wish the two sides would have transparency though. What is each side asking for and what is/are the sticking point(s). None of our business I guess, but it would give me a better idea of who is more at fault.

What do you mean. All you need to know is AT&T is fighting for you.

I signed up for U-Verse because it was lightyears better than the Comcast option in Northern California... until I discovered MLB Extra Innings and NHL Center Ice isn't available on U-Verse.

It's 2011 in America, and we can't get NHLCI or MLBEI when we're willing to pay for it? MLB isn't an issue, because I have MLBTV and watch at work, but I was going to DVR all the Islanders games (because no one is gonna tip me off as to the score).

NHLNetwork has the leverage here. They can command fair carriage costs, likely the same they command from Comcast or Time Warner, because customers can and will switch to another service which does carry the network.

This sucks.

Say what you want about NHL Network (it definately isn't perfect), "On the Fly" was a daily watch on my office TV, and I spent many afternoons with that XM radio broadcast as background noise.

I hate comcast more than I hate this move (i still love ya, Uverse), so I won't be leaving.

But just wanted to say this both sucks and blows at the same time.

NHL Network on ATT U-Verse

Not sure where to put this, but has there been any news about the NHL Network returning to ATT U-Verse?
