Why the Jets home opener against the Canadiens needs to be a Whiteout

We are less than 1 week away from the biggest home opener, and dare I say, biggest regular season game in the history of NHL hockey in this city. I’ve attended 2 of the 3 exhibition games and the crowd wasn’t simply loud, they were THUNDEROUS.

However despite the fervor from the crowd and the energy the team seemed to get from them, there still seemed to be something lacking. When I looked around at the crowd during the game from the Press Box, something seemed off.

As you can see in the above picture there is a lack of uniformity in our crowd. Some people are wearing old Jets 1.0 jerseys, others are wearing the new Jets 2.0 shirts and the colours in the bowl ran the full spectrum.

More after the jump.

As always, we want to hear what you have to say. Do you want to see the Whiteout return for the home opener or do you think it’s something best left in the past? Sound off in the comments.

I think the Whiteout needs to be reserved for the playoffs - as it always was.

As historic as Oct 9th is, I don't think there should be a whiteout. Fans decked out in Jets gear that spans both eras is great, IMO.

I agree that the whiteout should be playoff only.

Most people who preordered Authentics will want to wear them the first chance they get. I pick mine up Saturday - it's the home Blue - and sorry but it's coming with me on the 9th! I want to wear it ASAP, and I don't think I'll be alone!

Plus, leaving the whiteout for the playoffs gives us yet another great event to look forward to.

Seems I may be in the minority in thinking we should have a whiteout for the 1st game.

Anyone want to join me for a polar-night-blue-out??

i agree, the Winnipeg Jets White Out are symbolic of Winnipeg playoff games....just wouldn't seem right having a white out for a regular season game.

And technically, we'd be stealing the White Out Home Opener idea from Phoenix.

I agree and understand that it is historic and not just any regular season opener.

But, if we honour and respect tradition, then the whiteout should be saved for the playoffs.

I'm sure the current Jets have seen clips of the old Jets playoff games at the Arena --just more motivation for them to make the playoffs.

That's kind of my take on it. "those" Jets are gone.... they also took or stole, or however you want to look at it, the 'White Out'.

I'm still advocating a newer, stronger, fully operational, 'Blue Out'.

The home Jerseys just look so good.

On the other hand it would be a good time to rightfully reclaim the White-Out that was ripped off by a certain team temporarily stuck in the desert. Just for this one regular season game an exception could be made.

Regular season should just be a sea of home blues and that tradition should start Sunday (jersey arrival maybe). Like in Calgary it looks incredible when the majority wear the home reds. People I know from other cities always comment on this.

Save the whiteout for playoffs

I say the people trying to get the whiteout together for the home opener should go for it.

Thing is, there are too many people, I included, who think it should be reserved for the playoffs. For this reason, it won't look like a whiteout on opening night.

But knock yourselves out

I would love to one day see everyone wearing the Blue.

Instead of Calgary's "Sea of Red", how about Winnipeg's "Blue Sky"?

To correspond to our aviation theme.

i kinda think one opening night whiteout would be cool. It's not the playoffs, it's our coming out party, so I'd be fine with a whiteout personally.

However, to get it done full-scale, I dont think there's time.

Effing rights that it should be a whiteout. Time to remind every NHL team who started this practice of home unity, and there's no better time to do it than on Sunday, during a nationally televised game (CBC in Canada, NHL Network in the US).

Forget about saving it for the playoffs. This team might not make it. Besides, giving them a small taste up front of how we'll be in April might push these players even harder to get us in the playoffs.

Who cares if you wanna wear your new home jersey? You have another 40 home games to show it off.

This is an historic event. I always assumed the Jets 2.0 home opener would be a whiteout. I will be wearing a white Jets shirt on October 9th. Just this once.

Afterwards whiteouts should be reserved for the playoffs only.

I'm still sticking to the need for a Whiteout on opening night, but moving forward this is an excellent idea.

White Out was used for last reg season game in 1996. So first game back 2.0 why not?

Im okay with white out being held off till playoffs but I also dont mind it for home opener.

Do we know if True north still wants to do white outs?

Yup, TNSE bought the trademark for it, so in all likelihood, these dreams of a blue sky will fall on deaf ears. There's going to be a whiteout come playoff time.
