UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view)

* Champ Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard (for lightweight title)
* Champ Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian (for featherweight title)
* Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann
* Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon
* Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan

PRELIMINARY CARD (Spike TV)

* Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago
* Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens

PRELIMINARY CARD

* Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic
* Darren Elkins vs. Tiequan Zhang

Really good card yet again. The Spike fights are more interesting than the first 2 PPV fights but I understand the reasoning behind it.

Really pulling for Mike Massenzio. He's a great guy from right around where I lived in Jersey. Just an awesome, awesome dude. Took a huge step up when he fought Krzysztof at 205 (he's barely a 185er and Krzysztof is more of a heavyweight). That was pretty awesome to see him try his hand there (I mean, he had no way of ever getting Krzysztof to the ground...) and step up like that.

Really hope he can pull past Cantwell.

- I'm not real confident that Edgar will get the win but I'm a fan of him and really dislike Maynard (as a fighter) so I went with him.
- I think Melvin's takedown defence has improved enough to avoid Lauzon's takedowns, which have never been real strong, and get the TKO/KO win.
- I'm on the fence for the Sonnen/Stann fight due to Sonnen's long layoff and Stann being such a big MW. As long as Chael has kept his cardio up though, I think he will pull it off. He doesn't really have to worry about subs from the bottom with Stann.
- Looking forward to Stipe Miocic making his UFC debut. From what I've heard he's one of the best HW prospects out there. Big guy who's a former Golden Gloves champion and NCAA division I wrestler.

Maynard
Aldo
Sonnen
Lauzon
Phan

I don't care about the rest of the fights.

But WOW, what a card. I'm very excited to see Aldo, Sonnen and Lauzon all on one card. 3 of my fav fighters.

LOVE this card. There are some tough picks on this one too. Hopefully I do better than 135, I bombed that one pretty hard.

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view)

* Champ Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard (for lightweight title)
* Champ Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian (for featherweight title)
* Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann
* Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon
* Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan

PRELIMINARY CARD (Spike TV)

* Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago
* Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens

PRELIMINARY CARD

* Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic
* Darren Elkins vs. Tiequan Zhang
* Eric Schafer vs. Aaron Simpson
* Steve Cantwell vs. Mike Massenzio

just a few notes:

-Going with Aldo because while Hominick was a bit of a challenge, it wasn't a one-round fight
-Edgar wins by decision or maybe Guillotine. Maynard's going to be tough but I think Edgar showed he has developed his game enough to cancel out Gray's strengths.
- Stann's biggest test yet. I'm pulling for him because I think Sonnen has a good chance to win, but it's hard not to pull for Stann instead.
-Guillard is a jackson fighter...I like Lauzon but Guillard probably wins by TKO.
- I think Nam Phan gets revenge and wins, hopefully he won't let it go to decision though

that televised prelim card is pretty sick. Those fights would both be on a lot of weaker card's PPV lineup.

For those who complain the lighter weight classes get no love.. this has to be the lightest PPV card ever by weight. Should be good.

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard - It almost looked like Frankie felt invincible the last time they fought, and he got a rude awakening. He took over the fight after that though, and settled in to his gameplan. I actually think Edgar finishes this fight by dropping Maynard and choking him out in the 3rd or 4th round.

Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian - Can Aldo and Edgar just swap belts after this card? They are both better suited for the other division. I like Aldo to finish Florian via sub but this weight cut could be tough on him again. I don't think he has much left in this division.

Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann - I never really took Stann seriously as a contender. Then he beat Leben, so I took note. I said that if he beat Santiago I would start to really take notice. However, I just think this is a really bad matchup for him. I don't trust him being able to get up off his back, and I think Sonnen will be able to bring it for the full 15 minutes. I think it'll be a bloody war between these two guys, with Sonnen taking a tidy decision.

Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon These guys are just on different levels. Lauzon is a solid fighter, but he cant compete with the top tier. I don't think it's a mistake Guillard is on this card either, because if he knocks Lauzon out he may get the next title shot.

Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan - I usually never pick against Garcia due to love he gets from the judges, but I think his run has come to an end. I think Phan will submit him, avenging his loss.

Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago - Maia should show off his stand-up early, but then settle in with the sub of the night in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens - Can't go against my favorite fighter. Should be an awesome fight. Pettis struggles against wrestlers, but that wont be a problem here. I think Pettis subs him.

* Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic
* Darren Elkins vs. Tiequan Zhang
* Eric Schafer vs. Aaron Simpson
* Steve Cantwell vs. Mike Massenzio

I've had a gut feeling for a while that Stann wins this fight. Sonnen has been on a pretty serious layoff, and listening to his interviews before this fight he doesn't sound very confident

He's just playing his character. If he did his typical trash talking about Stann it would alienate a lot of his fans. He's smart enough to realize this. He will have absolutely no problem putting Stann on his back.

He still can't help himself though so he has to find other fighters to trash talk

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view)

* Champ Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard (for lightweight title) - 3rd TKO. Gray won't gas himself out in the first round this time. I fully expect a better game plan, Randy Couture coaches Gray to the title here.
* Champ Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian (for featherweight title) - Kenflo will give him his toughest fight to date but Aldo is a little better everywhere. 4th rd. sub.
* Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann - Taking Sonnen here because I"m not sure Stann can stuff his TD and Sonnen has a pretty good chin. Should be a contender for FOTN.
* Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon - I'm still not sold on Guillard and think he needs to fight an actual title contender before getting his shot. Joe is not a contender at this point, Melvin finishes him in the 2nd round after Joe's gas tank lets him down again. If Guillard gets a title-shot after beating Lauzon I will be very disappointed, especially with Henderson/Guida coming up and the rumours of Gil heading over from SF.
* Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan - Garcia just isn't that good, Phan gets the decision he should have been awarded last time.

PRELIMINARY CARD (Spike TV)

* Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago - I can't see anyway Jorge takes this fight, which probably means he'll end up getting cut again. I really wish they would've gave him a lesser opponent or two and let him get a little run going instead of being thrown to the wolves.
* Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens - There isn't a striker at 155 that can go toe to toe with Pettis. Stephens will think otherwise and end up KO'd in round 2.

PRELIMINARY CARD

* Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic
* Darren Elkins vs. Tiequan Zhang
* Eric Schafer vs. Aaron Simpson
* Steve Cantwell vs. Mike Massenzio

This could be the ninth straight time Leonard Garcia enters the cage and his opponent beats him. He owes his job to some of the worst judging the sport has ever seen, they've managed to **** up half of his last eight fights (three he got split decision wins, one draw).

I was a little surprised to see both Guillard and Aldo at -330 for their fights. I think they'll both win, but I see Aldo as a much bigger favorite. If memory serves Florian got dropped twice by Diego Nunes. Assuming he even survives 5 rounds I see it being a very lopsided decision for Aldo.

I've seen quite a few people taking Stann here, and I'm not exactly sure why. His only chance is catching Sonnen standing as I don't think it's terribly likely he'll sub Sonnen (even as susceptible as he is). Sonnen has a phenomenal chin, so I don't see that "puncher's chance" equating to much, especially when Stann will likely be on his back for 14 minutes.

Gray beat Edgar the first time, IMO beat him the second time, and I don't see anything that would indicate to me that Maynard can't beat him again. If I was a betting man I'd definitely take Gray at +125. This should be a pick 'em. I was also a little surprised to see Pettis at -300. Stephens shouldn't be that much of a dog in this one.

Don't know where you're getting that from, 13 people have posted their predictions and only 2 picked Stann to win.

I didn't mean here as in this site specifically, I meant here like in this particular fight. Just from reading through other sites I've encountered more people who think Stann will win than I would've thought. Reason I say that is I think Stann might be a little overrated, and it's just a horrible matchup for him.
