Not opposed to the pickup at all, could be a good move, no real risk to it.
But i am surprised that it was Oreskovich waived instead of sending Volpatti down. Other than the LW/RW thing...did they feel the need for TWO underwhelming fighters instead of just one? I liked a lot of what Oreo showed late in camp, showed he actually has some hands, and has that ability to absolutely obliterate people when he gets a solid hit in. Volpatti is pretty meh. Doesn't really do anything particularly well, still not really NHL calibre. But oh well. Hopefully Lappy and Weise can carry that line until we get healthier and someone else likely gets bumped down to play with them.
If you follow the interviews with the coaches the writing was on the wall; they love Volpatti (he blocks shots?), and Vigneault's comments on Oreskovich were lukewarm at best (even after his previous two stronger outings). I think Oreskovich either needs to figure out how to contribute a bit more in the offensive zone, or he needs to incorporate a bunch more grit and tenacity in his game if he ever wants to make the NHL (under AV anyways).
Oreskovich isn't exactly a liability, but he doesn't do anything particularly well; can't fight, can't score, is inconsistent with his physical play.
Oreskovich lost his spot when he stood there and watched Lapierre fight Peckham.
AV made it pretty clear in the pre-season that he needed Oreskovich to assert himself physically and he really didn't. He made some nice plays with the puck but he's not good enough at that aspect of the game to let him off the hook for being physical.

I think this is the thing that did him in. I remember AV saying that every player had to have a bottom line, one thing that they could do consistently and well at an NHL level to make the team... obviously Oreo didn't.

he didn't stand up for himself other than bear-hugging some guy, so as a result...
Lapierre takes a pounding for sticking up for him

Gillis most likely realized they put the wrong guy on waivers
It should of been Duco who stayed and Oreo should of been sent down
So instead of risking losing Duco if they recall him, they picked up Weise instead
I'm guessing he was waived now so he could be brought up later if necessary. Easier to waive now and have him go through then when teams start losing guys to injury

I think that was what Gillis concluded. I actually thought that Oreskovich had some promise as a fourth liner who could score some goals and hit. He wasn't going to be the fighter on that line but he showed some offensive skills that were enough to tease you into wondering if there was something there that we could have developed. Hopefully he clears waivers.

I understand what you are saying but it doesn't serve much purpose for Oreskovich to start something with Peckham and get his arse handed to him. It might show he's game but getting his getting his butt kicked just to prove he's game doesn't make much sense to me.

They can call Duco up whenever they want without waivers. He's only exposed to waivers on the way down.

True - I expect him to fight some of the battles he basically starts.
But I'm more talking about how I expect Weise to drop the mitts on times where he throws hits like Oreo did that initiated that "altercation". I understand why Oreo doesn't particularly like fighting (as he isn't good at it); but when you play "gritty" - it is expected you have to "answer the bell".

Your point doesn't hold water; swapping Oreskovich for Weise isn't exactly a drop-off in skill, in fact Weise has had a ton more offensive AHL success then Oreskovich has ever had. If anything, the fourth line just got more skilled, but lost a bit of speed.
Let's keep this in perspective. This guy doesn't have to be the best 4th liner ever. He just needs to be better than Oreskovich and everything on his record says that he is.
Spot on. This is a +1 for offensive potential in the bottom 6. Minor upgrade is still a positive move.
