Sean Avery

Anyone else love to see JR open the purse on this? It's essentially be a $1mil/1yr contract, and he'd bring some much needed attitude and toughness. Play him in Tlusty or Dwyer's spot.

Abso-****ing-lutely not... Sorry, but he's EASILY my least favorite player in NHL history (not that that would matter), we DON'T need him with the forward depth we already have, and it would just start another scapegoat situation in which we ***** to the management about how all we do is bring in random 3rd line veterans and take roster spots away from our prospects/kids. It's a match made in hell, TBH...

I may be in the minority here, but I actually wouldn't mind having him on the team. All shenanigans aside, he is an effective bottom 6 forward that can forecheck well and contribute 25 to 30 points.

I wouldn't take him for $2 million, though.

1) It wouldn't be $1 million. It's just under $2 million if the re-entry clause carries over. If it doesn't, you'd be claiming the full $4 million.

Edit: this blog appears to have the answer. Either way, Avery would cost the team claiming him $2 million for this year. If it's via traditional waivers, Dallas pays the other $2 million and NYR are off the hook. If it's re-entry, NYR pay the other $2 million and Dallas is off the hook.

2) If JR is going to open the purse, it should be for another center. Brule would be a better fit than Avery, although still not likely. If Christensen had been waived instead of Avery, it would have been more intriguing to me.

Never mind, not for that price.

Anything over $750,000 is too much.

Why would it be $1M and not $2M? He's on waivers, not re-entry waivers.

This team isn't going to spend $2M on a forward who scored 3 goals in 76 games, regardless of "toughness."

EDIT: beaten

Absoltutely not. He'll just be a distraction. Don't need his attitude around the team.

If we're picking a 4th liner, I'd much rather have Blair Betts.

I like Avery (He's essentially the NHL's version of an NFL wideout) though just dunno if we'd have the space for him. I would probably take Sean over Dwyer if the price was right though

Not at the price we'd have to pick him at. Cheaper price? Absolutely.

But Blair Betts? Absolutely. Him and Sutter working the PK units? We'll never be scored on.

And we'd have 4 actual centers for a change.

The success Carolina has had that Atlanta, Florida, Phoenix, etc... has not is that people who play here often want to stay here despite smaller crowds and less pay. Its fun to badmouth JR and Mo for their nepotism, but it gives the team a small recruiting advantage that most of the other small market teams are missing.

The upside of a locker room cancer has to be very high for it to be worth it in our organization. Avery replacing Tlusty is hardly a talent boon worth the cost of having him on our roster.

Skinner-Staal-Ruutu
Jokinen-Sutter-Dalpe
Poni-Brent-Tlusty
LaRose-Betts-Stewart

Compared to the current lines (the ones Chip tweeted about), I think these look a lot better. Improved FO%, improved PK, improved top 6.

Our team is struggling on offense. Adding a 7 goal scorer, and bumping the 8 goal scorer up to the 3rd line probably isn't the answer.

I think there is a lot of hope Tlusty is going to amount to something this year. If he does, then the lines don't look quite as absurd.

Agreed. And if the post on the waiver thread on the trade board is true that Betts's shoulder is adversely affecting his FO%, he loses a lot of the value he'd give this team.

That said, why not give Betts a try if LaRose is hurt and needs some time on IR? If it isn't working, send him back to Philadelphia.

Tripp would be SO jealous to not be the most flamboyant member of the organization.

Back when Avery was playing for the Kings, one game when they played the Red Wings, Avery decided to s**t talk Yzerman. He's leaning over the boards saying things like "get off the ice you one legged POS, you're too old, you haven't done anything in years, you were a crappy captain..."

So Shannahan didn't like this very much and is standing near the Kings bench. He says, "Sean stop calling me. Just stop calling me. Lose my number. I'm tired of hearing you b***h and moan about how your coach sucks, how your linemates can't do s**t, and how you hate your team and how you think they'll never make the playoffs. Just delete my number and stop calling."

Needless to say Avery had zero response, as he caught the evil eye from his coach and teammates.

That was related to me some years ago, and every time I hear somebody seriously talking about bringing that little twatwaffle on our team, I feel compelled to bring it out to show WHY that is a bad idea.
