If Ohlund is put on the LTIR, which he certainly qualifies for at this point, the team can, without penalty, replace his cap hit for as long as Ohlund remains 'out'.
As long as Ohlund remains injured however, TB, or any team he is traded to, cannot release him. That's in the CBA to protect the players from just being dropped by their team when they get injured.
We saw it in training camp with Scott Jackson (who also had a knee thing). We couldn't even send him down until he was cleared by the doctors.
But the Lightning would still pay his full salary plus that of his replacement? If attendance slumps because of the Bolts poor play maybe Vinik would have to consider this option.
I can't figure out if you're high or just generally what the hell you're talking about.
I don't think it'd shock many of us if SFY made a substantial trade, and Kubina and Ohlund create a redundancy.
Kubina, despite being a Lightning longer, is probably worse than Ohlund would be, and also hypothetically easier to trade, since he's in the last year of his deal. The two of them slowing down the d-corp simultaneously is not an appealing thing to happen either, and it doesn't upgrade the defense from what we had last year at all. (other than Gilroy for Lundin) with Kubina's regression, it probably makes it worse overall.

Yes, Ohlund and any 'replacement player(s)' would get paid their NHL salaries during such a time.

Lightning coach Boucher says D Kubina (lower body) is out. He was hurt Saturday, previously undisclosed. ... Roloson in net. ... Gervais in.
Man, during year's playoffs I was really euphoric, Kubina was so good before his concussion. Sad to see a player once fancied by all regress that much in relatively short time (just look at his numbers with the Thrashers not even two years ago).

No surprise but Marty St Louis is not playing tonight, a statement regarding his status is expected from the team shortly #tblightning

Lightning announce Marty St. Louis sustained nasal and facial fractures as result of puck to face at skate. Good news the eye was not hurt
That's a nasty injury, but no damage to the eye. That is very good news.
Defenseman Pavel Kubina (lower body) is on injured reserve retroactive to Monday. He is eligible to play Monday against the Devils at the St. Pete Times Forum. "That's what I'm shooting for," said Kubina, who skated with the team wearing a red no-contact jersey. … Center Nate Thompson (upper body) was expected to play against the Flyers, Boucher said.
It never fails. You lend a friend a nice shiny new toy to play with for a couple of weeks and it comes back all banged up. The best you can hope for is that they don't actually break it.
Lighting coach Guy Boucher was very negative about the prospects of seeing defenseman Mattias Ohlund back any time soon. Basically, Boucher said, Ohlund's knees are "worn down." Ohlund had arthroscopic surgery on both on Oct. 11 to clean out "loose bodies," but the recovery has been slow and painful and Ohlund is not even skating. "It's not about damage," Boucher said. "He's had enough damage over the years. It just becomes something that's difficult to manage because you can't do much more than has been done. It's pain tolerance now. It's a question of mobility. It's a question of can he skate at the level in the NHL that he needs to follow?"
