Reading the Flyers board, some posters were butt hurt regarding Betts being put on waivers, saying he was a good PKer. So I guess that's positive.

I for one have really lamented the loss of the draft picks. I think they've gotten good value in most of those trades, guys like Wiz and Shneider made big impacts and without them the playoffs were doubtful, but in the end they were one season rentals and the picks haven't been replaced. The quality of our scouting dept. only makes me lament those picks more. Timmins turns picks into NHLers at a remarkably consistent rate.

So regardless of how Betts and Campoli work out (and I like both moves, but have limited expectations of the players beyond being competent bottom pair NHLers on a good team), PG has addressed depth issues without spending picks, he's added a legit top line player through FA and he's kept a core group who clearly get along together, veterans and top young talent both. He's also hung onto enough cap room to remain flexible going into the season. Never been a PG fan, but I can't fault any of his moves this off season (edit- except Budaj, jury's definitely out for me on that one). I'll take Betts and Campoli over Halperin/Sopel in a heartbeat.

wow, can't remember a time when this board's wanted a player so badly and we got him

great move by PG albeit a minor one, this will solidify the team greatly. very excited for this season.

I like it. Worst case scenario we have Engqvist as a backup.

That's pretty awesome. Even if it's on us.

What s nice is that he is really good at PK, so that should pleks a break and he can focus on offense instead. This also let s Engqvist develop more in the AHL

Holmgren already said that Talbot will use those minutes.

Last season, people were talking about Wiz and we got him

The difference here, though, is that Betts is a gritty 4th liner.

Even if he ends up sucking, what did we lose? Our waiver wire spot? How often do we pick players on waivers?
I'm amongst the few guys who suggested Betts so don't get me wrong, I'm glad we got him. Actually, it's amongst the most easiest decisions Gauthier had to take in years but let's give him the credit, he did take it. Was mostly responding to people who were saying that it made no sense since his shoulder was not just hurt but finished. Clearly, if Gauthier picked him, it's not to put him on the IR. It's to help till everybody is back. So we will need a guy with 2 pretty good shoulders, I believe.

Yet I agree with some.....with 1 shoulder he's better than Engqvist who actually didn't have any shoulders....

So i guess Engvist didn't impress PG at all. I like Betts, no risk-signing.

Can't agree more. Or is it possible that he can't give more than he did at this point in his career? Tough to really know if it's a lack of effort or just a lack of talent/confidence. We'll give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he progresses this year in Hamilton.....but he CLEARLY wasn't good enough despite the supposed GREAT assets he had in winning faceoffs and not being beat defensively. Clearly, it wasn't enough....and in reality it really wasn't.

As blinded as people will be by his size, more importantly he takes very few penalties. We can definitely use that.

Now with Betts and Engvist out, i can't wait to see White skate again and we will have finally a decent fourth line:

Moen-Betts-White

Good pick up if his shoulder lasts. See guys give GMs the benefit of the doubt.

Also Whitesnake I hope this restores some faith in managment. Also good call on ur behalf for the pick up.

Betts was 50,3% on faceoffs, not bad at all.

Wait this can't be right. Just yesterday very knowledgeable posters were telling me that PG was a pacifist and was trying to build a team of creampuffs, "no way would he ever claim Betts!" they exclaimed. I'm going to wait for a more reliable source than multiple people on twitter before I believe this hogwash!

As per the Flyers board, he's a very good penalty killer. He'll replace Halpern, but with some toughness and grittiness.
