Yeah pretty injury prone. Let's hope he doesn't get injured. Either way, high risk, high reward.
How awesome would it be if his last name was Betty
Moen Betty White Moen!
ok, very dumb I know
solid pick-up, happy about it. If he's damaged goods, we waive him
The good news is he looked like he was on the team until yesterday/today, was practicing in his regular 4th line slot. So it really looks like he lost his job to Talbot (and the young guys coming up, Philly's deep at C) and not to injury. I'm really relieved, we needed help at 4th line C and on the PK. Betts is pretty much the prototype of that. And as you say, if he's damaged goods, the cost was nil.

I'll trust this guys opinion (Bill Meltzer--hockeybuzz blogger):
Quote:
None of the moves the Flyers made yesterday can be classified as a complete shock. However, I did not think the club was going to waive Blair Betts. During yesterday's practice, in fact, Betts skated in his normal 4th line center spot.
When general manager Paul Holmgren addressed the media in the SkateZone lockerroom, he implied that Betts would be gone from the team even if he clears waivers at noon today. Holmgren said that he had just "had a difficult conversation" with the veteran forward, and admitted that the play of Matt Read and Sean Couturier in penalty killing situations during the preseason -- as well as the signing of Max Talbot -- had factored into the decision to waive Betts.
If it were my call to make, I would have kept Betts around. He's still a good faceoff man (better than Talbot or the 18-year-old Couturier) and makes few mistakes. Plus, he's only making $700,000 on the cap, so the club is not really saving that much money by jettisoning him from the roster. The only financial advantage is that it gets the club $700 K closer to not needing to dip into the forthcoming Ian Laperriere LTIR allowance (which only applies if the team is otherwise over the cap).
Looks a lot like Moen -- an ultra-defensive specialist who'll be mistaken for a physical energy player and get a lot of flak for not hitting as much as people think he should even though that's not the point of him.
At evens, the Flyers used him to get beat up by minutes against middling opponents but heavily tilted towards the defensive zone, which was a factor in giving Brière and Leino some ultra-cushy offensive time. But he got beat up when he did it.
Kills penalties. A LOT. And fairly well.
Really, he's a lot like Moen. I wonder if that implies that the Habs will be using a "defensive" line, built around Betts and Moen, to play ridiculously often in the defensive zone and free up another line (DD/Eller/Whoever?) to get softer minutes and lots of offensive time and rack up points.
Good pick up if his shoulder lasts. See guys give GMs the benefit of the doubt.
Also Whitesnake I hope this restores some faith in managment. Also good call on ur behalf for the pick up.
Some will say that knowing my positions, I will take a lot for me to recognize it...
When actually while not in love with it, I don't think it's that awful either. It does reassure a little 'cause the Betts pickup was a total gimme and seeing that they did picked him up, unless there was something we didn't know like a major shoulder injury, it's reassuring to see that they did pick him up. We need a better mix in players and Betts, as small a role he'll play, is a sign of wanting to have a better mix.
As far as good call on my part, a whole lot of people called this or wanted him so not a whole lot of merit. Actually, like my HF friends love to say, it is a whole lot of wins and losses at some points. And another example is another guy who was put on waivers today who I thought and the time of the draft would become a GREAT 2-way player in this league....Can't believe Brett MacLean is on waivers....Would be tempted to pick him...but there's no room.

I think that the quality of PK guys on the team (other than Plek) is directly proportional to the amount of points Plek can put up. The less time he spends on the PK the more energy he has at ES and PP.
Glad Betts found a home, he is an NHL player. Consider this, last year only Manny Maholtra had fewer offensive zone starts in the whole league than Blair Betts.
