It's not, but Dave Steckel is worth even less.

Comparing Kovalev's cap hit of 5M + the remainder of his salary on an Ottawa team that was sure already hitting bottom @ trade deadline PLUS the fact that his relationship with the coach was very sour results in a 7th round pick.

Come on, at least weigh the factors...

It's a 4th round pick...and they are usually like 3 years away from playing after they are drafted IF they become anything.

If they weren't going to do it, someone was.

No way Betts was about to clear waivers. He still has too much to offer.

I would've loved for the Hawks to grab him.

Decent pickup, especially considering I didn't like Engqvist at all. Was a bit disappointed yesterday when Habs didn't try to get Steckel, since I think he's a good addition for the Leafs, and would have been a good fit on the Habs, but I like Betts for free better.

Remember when Metropolit was claimed off waivers, the Flyers were playing in Montreal the next game? Metro basically switched dressing rooms pre-game time.

I bet you could put a pretty solid team together only with current NHLers 4th round picks. (or later)

Not to mention the type of team you could put together if you looked at this throughout history.

When people say 4th round picks or late picks are worthless guys like Ryan Miller, Andrei Markov, Pekka Rinne etc come to mind. That's without looking.

It was pretty much a given that Betts was going to be claimed. Good move by Montreal. They needed a 4th line center. Betts is still good on faceoffs and he's a fantastic PKer.

Kovalev wasn't far from a salary dump. Steckel is relatively cheap.

Steckel can win faceoffs and throw a check here and there.

What does Kovalev do ? Deke one player then lose the puck.

He's out of the league now.

Steckel rarely throws a hit.

Once a bonus becomes impossible to earn, it is erased from the cap hit. It's just that many bonuses are theoretically possible to earn even up to the end of the season (scoring and whatnot).

What about guys like Visnovsky, Savard, Hejduk, etc. that are All-Stars that were picked in the 4th round?

This one was a no-brainer.

The 4th line center job in Montreal was up for grabs and none of the young guys did anything to take it.

When healthy the Habs should have 4 pretty decent lines.

Cammalleri-Plekanec-Cole
Pacioretty-Gomez-Gionta
Desharnais-Eller-Kostitsyn
Moen-Betts-White
