I'm curious, what do you mean by long term ramifications?
I think Parise wanted the responsibility, and I think he can handle the responsibility. He knows it's his team, and the team is committed to him as the leader, regardless of Kovy's contract.
This pick makes sense for DeBoer too. He wants a guy that works hard, and if the whole team follows Parise's example, I think we will be successful.
Well, 1: it complicates contract negotiations because it gives Parise's agent not only proof-positive of his worth to the team, not that that was in much doubt, but more that it makes the Kovalchuk comparison a lot more fair, from a contract perspective. Basically, it gives him every right to demand a contract that the team likely cannot afford.
And 2: it just makes it that much worse if he leaves, and the media will work Kovy about being the new captain after Parise was chosen over him a year ago.
But that's just the pessimism talking. You just gotta hope that it strengthens his relationship with Lou and the organization and everything works out for the best. I'm sure Lou's had those thoughts before, but the right thing is to just put them out of mind and let the one ice play and coach's input dictate the decision, which seems to be what happened.
Burnside "whyd they make parise captain when hes goin to ny and kovalchuk is stuck there forever because nobody wants his high cap hit for what he brings to the table"
Pessimism and cynical thoughts is just wasted energy. It was the right decision for today and it will be in the future whether he sticks with the team or not.
If he leaves yea it will suck but that's what life is things suck and you get through it.
I'm not certain Clarkson will be a long-term Devil.
When Steckel was traded yesterday I got the text alert from the TSN app on my iPhone and when I first read it I thought it said David Clarkson traded to the Leafs and I wasn't surprised because that's where I figured he'd be traded to if he was traded.
So based on my original reaction before my reading comprehension skills kicked in I guess I'm with you on believing Clarkson is not here long term.

Those are good points, but like you said, Parise and his agent already know what his worth to the team is. I don't think this raises the price much, if at all.
I think this does strengthen Parise's bonds to the team. He's being given the chance to be the main man on a team that has an illustrious past and a promising future, and I'm sure he appreciates that. He will think twice about walking away from that. Furthermore, whatever invented or real rivalry or jealousy there was between him and Kovalchuk, has now been settled by the powers that be, firmly in his favour. It's unequivocally his team now, and he knows it.
Lou will take care of his captain. It won't be like Niedermayer, because he doesn't have a brother pulling him away, and he doesn't feel like he's achieved everything he can here.
I think this is a positive step for the team's chances of retaining Parise.

Where is Jordan Parise playing these days? Sign him up to be the backup goalie next year and then Zach will have no excuse to not sign here. That seems to be what Lou is doing with the Zajac family.

there is probably none. Just like back in the day with Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. The media ASSUMED there was a problem... the players couldn't care less.

He was once in our system, but he's not very good. He's on a tryout with the Rangers, last I heard. Probably going to play in Europe again. I don't think there's any danger there.

Ya, I don't think there is as much of a problem as is speculated, but in any case, it's clear which one is the top dog now.

IF we manage to be somehow competitive, he isn`t walking people, believe me. IF not, can you blame him?

I hate you. Despite the fact I know why are you doing this!

Really? That would be worse for Parise`s contract situation and you would have similar feelings? Interesting.

Good catch. I smell problems, Easton might not be happy about this.

Blah blah. We'll just wonder who it'll be next year, until they finally give it to the 100M dollar man, Turnoverchuk. That guy gives it away easier than Paris Hilton in a night vision video.
The master of sarcasm never does it so many times it`s obvious he is being sarcastic.
You`re not gonna go far kid.

1. true, but he`s worth it regardless, so...
2. Don`t worry about that.
Even though Imo kovy would have made a great captain (maybe even better than ZP) im looking forward to seeing kovy score a lot of goals, now knowing that he isnt #1 guy that has to produce or the team struggles. A huge weight has been taken off Kovy's back.
I think Lou will open the wallet for Parise, if he's allowed to by ownership. Vanderbeek knows how important he is to the team, so I think he'll do it.
Frankly I'm a little pissed it wasn't Sykora. I can't believe no one brought that up yet. I shall attend opening night under protest until this grievous and heinous injustice is fixed. Who's with me?

I will support you if you join our Free Zharkov movement. We're turning our backs for three minutes (approximately ice time for the fourth line).
