Russian Flyer

Who was the Russian that the Flyers were looking at and now seems to have dissapeared. Sounded as if it was a done deal last year or so but nothing has ever some of it.

Denis Bodrov was basically penciled in by Holmgren, decided not to come over because there was a chance of AHL, got into locker room trouble in the KHL with his brother, was traded sparking even more of a slump, fell out of favor only to be traded again, decided to leave the KHL during a contract dispute, played a few games in the AHL, got hurt, and at the end of the season decided to return to Russia never to be heard from again.

Andrei Popov played over in Russia, had a breakout season, struggled with the idea of coming over to play in the AHL first before the NHL, decided the KHL was better suited for him, and has never been mentioned since.

I don't even think we have his rights anymore. If i remember correctly there was reports that he was close to coming over and partaking in training camp but he never did. He is playing in the KHL now for Moscow. I guess he just didnt want to leave Russia

Edit: There ya go much more in detail report of Bodrov from Chris Shafer

I thought Bodrov went back to Russia because his wife was pregnant and she couldn't get a visa to come over. I remember that was a huge topic of discussion because when it wasn't announced at first why he went back to the KHL, everyone speculated that it was because of attitude and playing shape....

Correct.

"... at the end of the season decided to return to Russia never to be heard from again."

His family was the reason.

He's doing pretty good in Spartak Moscow this season http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p....php?pid=89299

I'm sure he is, but since he's not really my concern anymore, I don't pay attention to him.

I follow the NHL prospects, but I don't consider him having a future with the Flyers or in the NHL for that matter.

Some European prospects seem to need silly amounts of coddling. Not always.

I remember he came over for one of the rookie camps and had an end-to-end rush where he essentially skated through the whole opposition and scored a goal that had the fans/writers/front office people that witnessed it drooling at his potential.

Then he never came back.

Youre all thinking of Alexei Kaigorodov.

Drozdetski was a prospect we had in the early 00's iirc. Kaigorodov, I might have blocked him out, but I can't remember him trying out for us. Drozdetski never made any real attempt at crossing the pond while Kaigorodov had a little teaser for Ottawa.

He (and perhaps his family as well) prefers living in Moscow to Glens Falls.

From what I can remember of what was reported at the time, he didn't exactly show that he belonged in the NHL during his time with the Phantoms, so it's not the greatest loss to the Flyers, but it would have been nice if we could get some Europeans to come over to play in the AHL a couple of seasons before giving up the NHL dream.
