The Winnipeg Jets claimed forward Brett MacLean off waivers. MacLean was placed on waivers by the Phoenix Coyotes
Pretty nice pickup, has good AHL numbers and got a cup of coffee with the Coyote's last season.

Woops, I was too late.. Merge please

This is a great pickup!

Very impressed. He will have to stick for us to keep his rights. Now the speculation begins as to where he slots in.

Now not signing Bodie makes more sense.

Really like this move. Why not? heck, the kid has put up good numbers since hitting pro (AHL) and if he can adjust in the NHL, we may have ourselves a decent player.

Low risk move and it carries a potential reward. I'm fine with it.

Nice pick up!!!!

Happy to see they did this even though it was this that cost Bodie his spot on the team. Thought Bodie would get a contract.

Now the kid needs to be given a chance to succeed. Very low risk

Interesting. We'll see how this works out. I wonder where he fits on the roster?

He has great hands. The question is whether or not his skating will allow him to keep up. Interesting move nonetheless. One of their team challenges is goal scoring so it can't hurt to take a shot. His skating is so ugly, but other NHL goal scorers have faced the same criticisms and eventually succeeded.

I didn't think they'd take him.

Did not see this one coming, although the Bodie situation may have alluded to this.

I suppose he's looking to fill the 4th line with Slater and Thorburn, or perhaps Maxwell's injury is uncertain. Should be interesting to see how it develops, it's low risk so I'm ok with it.

wow, very impressed by some of the other board members who were talking about picking him up in the rumours section over here. does anyone know what the 'book' is on him? i'll have to wander over to the phoenix board and try to find out why they decided not to keep him. like having a maclean on the team though. does he wear number 15?

Don't know too much about the guy, but seems like a pretty solid pickup.

Who gets sent down now? Stapleton?

He needs to play with the Jets for us to keep him.

This puts us over the 23 man limit, so looks like Stapleton might be sent to St John's as he has already cleared waivers (just my opinion).

Should be. He's a great AHL player but I don't want to see him on the Jets roster with the other options we have.

My guess is Cormier.

Ladd-Little-Wheeler
Kane-Scheifele-Wellwood/MacLean
Wellwood/MacLean-Burmistrov-Antropov
Glass-Slater-Thorburn
(extra forward - Stapleton or Maxwell)

Called it. I'd give him top-6 and see what he can do. Antro can now be a third liner.

I liked some of what I saw from Stapleton, but he's kind of a "jack of all trades, master of none" guy. Like you said, he's a great AHL player, but that's about it. Plus he's 29.

Cormier is an ideal 3rd line banger, and IMO he earned that spot in the preseason.

Please excuse my possible ignorance, but isn't there a rule where if you pickup a player off waivers he has to stay with that team for the season and cannot be sent to the minors?

No, the player can be send to the AHL.

However, he'll be subject to waivers again and other teams can claim him the way we did.

And if Phoenix claims him, they'll be able to send him to their AHL team without subjecting him to waivers again.

Nice pickup. Big winger, lacks some top end speed but he has a good skill set.

He has a real opportunity if he is lining up with Kane and Schiefele

Much prefer a guy like Cormier getting into the lineup over MacLean. The latter does not fit the profile of a bottom 6 forward, and his skills don't really translate effectively to the NHL to warrant PP time and top 6 minutes. He doesn't battle hard enough on a consistent basis and his work ethic has come under question at times. That stuff doesn't fly in a Dave Tippett system.

There's no denying he has a knack for scoring goals, and he may mature and grow in other areas of the game, but it's 50/50 at this point that he ever becomes an everyday NHL player. The same questions that dogged him in junior (speed, inflated stats playing with Tavares etc.) remain unanswered.

Great. That means there is no possible downside except for needing to make room on the roster.

i have a question. if maclean and scheifele both stick around and are productive nhl players by the time fehr comes back, what do we do with fehr? it looks like we're running out of roster spots for forwards. cormier will probably have to go down and i thought we could've really used his physical style of play on the third line. any thoughts or should we just cross that bridge when we come to it? where all of a sudden does wellwood fit into the team?
