He has great hands. The question is whether or not his skating will allow him to keep up. Interesting move nonetheless. One of their team challenges is goal scoring so it can't hurt to take a shot. His skating is so ugly, but other NHL goal scorers have faced the same criticisms and eventually succeeded.
wow, very impressed by some of the other board members who were talking about picking him up in the rumours section over here. does anyone know what the 'book' is on him? i'll have to wander over to the phoenix board and try to find out why they decided not to keep him. like having a maclean on the team though. does he wear number 15?
Much prefer a guy like Cormier getting into the lineup over MacLean. The latter does not fit the profile of a bottom 6 forward, and his skills don't really translate effectively to the NHL to warrant PP time and top 6 minutes. He doesn't battle hard enough on a consistent basis and his work ethic has come under question at times. That stuff doesn't fly in a Dave Tippett system.
There's no denying he has a knack for scoring goals, and he may mature and grow in other areas of the game, but it's 50/50 at this point that he ever becomes an everyday NHL player. The same questions that dogged him in junior (speed, inflated stats playing with Tavares etc.) remain unanswered.
i have a question. if maclean and scheifele both stick around and are productive nhl players by the time fehr comes back, what do we do with fehr? it looks like we're running out of roster spots for forwards. cormier will probably have to go down and i thought we could've really used his physical style of play on the third line. any thoughts or should we just cross that bridge when we come to it? where all of a sudden does wellwood fit into the team?
