It's very difficult for even an All-Star goalie to make a below-par team good by himself in today's NHL.

See: Tomas Vokoun.

Unless the Avs roll out Nashville or Pheonix's system I anticipate something similar to what Luongo and Vokoun experienced in Florida; and that's assuming Varly can play as well and for an entire season.

If Varly goes down (and his workload is going to be huge), that team is going to be really really bad.

Why on Earth would Colorado even attempt Nashville or Phoenix's system? Colorado actually has forwards who can score. They're not filled with 3rd line forwards all over their roster.

Mueller - Duchene - Hejduk
Kobasew - Stastny - DJones
Winnik - O'Reilly - Landeskog
McLeod - McClement - Galiardi

Hejda/Johnson
O'Brien/Quincey
Wilson/O'Byrne

One NHL 30 goal scorer and he last accomplished it five season ago (Hejduk). They have more 20-something goal scorers in their top six compared to NSH/PHX but a crisper hard-working style of play should be the sort of thing they strive towards (and, like NSH/PHX, they're a low payroll club at the moment). Being harder to play against wouldn't be a bad thing for them but I'm not sure they're ready to play at that level consistently. A lot seems to be on Duchene & Johnson breaking out in a big way and Mueller's return helping out the PP. Landeskog looked pretty decent against DET and they're probably going to need his net presence in a heavier role as the season progresses.

Excited to catch RNH's first game. He looked ready physically in the pre-season. I think he sticks and takes the Calder.

Walsh going off on Shanahan now: "[Bouchard's two game suspension] is a shameful farce for the League....All in all, these 20 minute disciplinary hearings are nothing more than kangaroo courts."

I'm pulling for Johansen for the Calder. He's got a nice experienced supporting cast down there.

I thought the tie down rule was fairly well know.

Give it to Johnson, he looks great in net tonight! I love Malkin already missing a game! He was playing way over his head last night and this might only help him make Semin look good!

Malkin's on my fantasy team, him missing a game isn't great for me.

Karma for picking a Penguin, I guess.

Who do they have that would work in a NSH/PHX system? Kobasew and their bottom 6. Wouldn't want to handcuff the rest of their top 6 by playing that style, especially not that top line. A counter-attack or a puck possession style would better suit them than a grinding system.

e; Heck, Mueller has already struggled in Phoenix's system and flourished in a more open Colorado attack.

Unfortunately Columbus will never be a scoring powerhouse. I swear it seems like putting on a Columbus jersey instantly makes it 3x as hard to score a goal even if everything is done properly. You could throw Ovechkin and Crosby there to play with Nash and still somehow end up with a PPG apiece line. Not sure what they did to piss off the HG but that's just the way it is.

Pens announcers hit new low for blaming the amount of snow left by hometown zamboni on SO loss.

As far as the team goes, impressive start with 3 in 4 days west coast trip to start season.

Avalanche struggled offensivly yesterday. Duchene and Stasny were especially poor. Varlamov was excellent. the Wings two goals simply weren't going to be stopped.

Game at 1:00 EST today at Boston. I'm assuming some of you guys get NESN.

^The Center Ice free preview is stil going. I'm very excited about watching the Bruins-Avs game! I have the day off, I got the husband duties out of the way early this morning, and I'm locked and loaded for a great sports day (hockey, MLB Playoffs and great MNF game).

Landeskog will be that sort of player in short order, although I agree on the top line generally. If Duchene is going to be an elite center he's going to have to get his nose dirtier and they may get more out of the second line that way unless Stastny can make his line go.

They were all about speed and transition last season but they sacrificed a decent portion of it on the blueline to get bigger and more defensive-minded. They should be tougher in front of their net but their overall possession game seems questionable. Better goaltending will surely help the numbers but they still have the look of a team that will lose the possession/shot battle. Opening up against Detroit & Boston could make that particularly evident. They've got a pretty tough opening month schedule.

Looks like avs are going into their second period collapse. Varly can only bail them out so hard.

kovalchuk has regressed. If he is going to play like this, its going to be a long season.

he breaks his stick on a one timer on a power play and stands there rather than going to get a new stick. like he was in a trance. then still on the same pp he skates the puck in his own zone right in front of his own net where patrick dwyer poke checks the puck off his stick and right on goal. more brain fade.

btw...the harder varly has to work, the sooner he may breakdown.

No goalie is going to be able to take the workload varly's being subjugated to now.

Avs scored though.

Varly's pretty much locked into 1st star at this point. Shutout or otherwise.

O'Reilly has been impressive, as usual.
