From your description, sounds like he has some Kenny Jonsson in him, which would be a very good thing! Perhaps including the injury Hx. too...

Heyyyyy, I saw them play twice in Norfolk last winter, shortly before New Year's. Were you also there?

No I wasn't there. I haven't been to the Scope to watch the Admirals since I lived out that way which was about 4 years ago. I live a couple hours from the arena now but in December there are back to back games in Norfolk against the Admirals. Normally I would only drive that far for an NHL game but if there is no NHL I can make a trip out of this and catch both.

watching the stream on the islanders website:

-Nino has to cut back on the unecessary penalties.
-Sundstrom looks very strong on his skates. Good checking forward.
-liked what i saw from Kabanov. He works like a horse, if he could bulk up a little

Yeah it is, just making sure it wasn't my connection. Can't expect much for an AHL preseason game at a small college rink. Better then nothing.

On Hamonic.... figures. Hopefully not serious.

As far as Poulin goes, I know he got the loss but apparently he faced a ton of shots. I'm sure splitting time and competing with a guy like Nilsson has forced him to elevate his game, and vice-versa with Anders. Could really be a blessing for both of these guys going forward into their NHL careers.

I just hope when all is said and done and we pick one of these guys(which I'm sure that day will eventually come) we make the right choice.

I thought poulin was very good. He has to work a little on his rebound control, but his overall game (especially his lateral movement) was great.

I thought Poulin looked very sharp. Tracked the puck well and was quick side to side and big in the net. He is a year or two away from regular NHL quality and could fill in soon if needed. The more seasoning he and Nilssen get the better, it will never hurt their development.

Rather than closing and creating a new one, I changed the thread title to reflect the new season.

poulin's big flaw is rebound control and he doesn't catch the puck well...he has to get better at this to suceed at the next level

So, I'm sitting here watching Claude Giroux, Danny Briere and Mark Katic get little done for the Eisbaeren against Uwe Krupp's Cologne Sharks, and naturally I can't help but think about ... the Soundtigers opening their season this weekend.

The AHL is going to be exciting and there are a number of clubs that have A LOT to look forward to.

I myself am currious about a few things when it comes to BPort's success.

1) Where is the goal scoring going to come from?
Aside from McDonald, who had over 40 goals two seasons ago, the only scorers of note on this team are Ullstrom and Cizikas, and neither of them has ever had more than 47 points in an AHL season (granted their careers are young). No doubt about it, we're putting a lot eggs into the baskets of namely Niederreiter, Nelson, Kabanov, Persson, Sundstrom and Halmo, all of whom could very well go through transitional problems and are likely to suffer the streakiness that comes with being a rookie playing an 80+ game schedule. As of now though, there's little proven scoring in this line-up. Heck, Watkins had 36 points last season, something only Cizikas, McDonald and Donovan topped.

2) Are we ready for the competition?
There was a thread not too long ago on one of the other boards talking about the various line-ups around the AHL in light of the lockout. We now get to see those line-ups and people cannot forget that the AHL will feature a large number of young players who would likely be in the NHL this year OR are coming down from the NHL. Our own division will be featuring a number of good young men like Henrique and Kreider. Now, we do have Hamonic and Niederreiter as our 'bonafide' NHLers. Several teams of number of them as well. Can't even imagine how things are going to be with Nugent-Hopkins, Eberle, etc. skating around for EDM's farm team.

3) Are we tough enough?
I'm going to assume that DeFazio, MacIver, Gallant and perhaps even Halmo will be asked to keep opponents honest. Hamonic naturally can do that as well. Aside from Travis, unless Halmo proves capable, none of them seems like the type of player you can give a regular shift too. I'm also not sure if any of them are real winners when it comes to fighting, something we actually had in years past.

4) Are we too inexperienced and homogenous on the blueline?
Let there be no doubt, I definitely want our own prospects getting the bulk of the playing time, but our top five is a very young and homogenous group. Hamonic can be the real exception, but none of Donovan, de Haan, Wishart or Ness put the fear of death into opponents and all are classified as puck-moving transitional Dmen. Landry too proved to be a decent puck-moving guy with offensive tendencies. That leaves Cantin and MacIver - when they play - to be the bruisers. We'll have to see how they go about handling that role.

5) Will one of Poulin or Nilsson take the bull by the horns and run with the starting job?
I personally think that these boys are at a point where they need to be winning games basically on their own accord. They need to shut things down and stop what's stoppable and good share of things that aren't. I predict that both are going to see a lot of traffic of them. They'll need to be sharp on rebounds. Still, will they solely platoon this year? Will one simply clearly outplay the other? My money is on Nilsson ultimately getting the better share of the starts.

Preseason Prospect Scoring Stat Predictions (for fun - if no NHL):
Forwards
Ullstrom 28-26-58
Cizikas 17-38-55
Niederreiter 22-27-49
Persson 16-23-39
Nelson 12-27-39
Kabanov 15-18-33
Sundstrom 8-19-27
Halmo 12-13-25

Defense
Hamonic 13-23-36
de Haan 6-30-36
Donovan 8-27-35
Wishart 7-17-24
Ness 3-20-23

Goalies
Nilsson 2.10, .930, 46 decisions
Poulin 2.35, .915, 36 decisions
