Why do people keep saying this? I must assume you don't actually watch him play.

Why on earth don't you think he can keep it up? He's > PPG over his last 50+ games.

I love it. I keep reading about how Giroux is "not that great defensively"....I always thought he was outstanding, nice to know he isn't the "average defensive player" most say he is.

The people here who say he isn't good defensively are out of their minds. But I've been saying that for quite a long time now.

VanSciver will never admit to being wrong so don't hold your breath.

It's funny because it's true.

Anyway, yeah, G has been a solid two way player most of his career. He's been a big plus in most seasons and can D up nice. He's that guy who will pursue you fiercely on the rare chance that you (initially) get the best of him. I love that in a player. He also gets physical on the backcheck when necessary and can deftly skate the puck out of trouble that may be too daunting for lesser players, making him a real asset defensively. It's a pity VanSciver can't recognize these aspects due to his rather rudimentary knowledge of the game.

I tried to find it on youtube, but for me, the play that best illustrates how solid Giroux is defensively is when he skates backwards from the centre ice line all the way into his zone as he's defending and hits the guy as he tries to get by... Classic and highly unusual play for a forward. Few d-men could do that so smoothly. Post it if you've got it!

Send a message via AIM to Giroux tha Damaja
There are a couple of other plays he has made while skating backwards that really impressed me. Plays where he skates backwards with the kind of acceleration that a lot of defensemen will turn and skate forward to generate before pivoting back again, good stuff.

Top 5 forwards for me:

Crosby, Malkin, Datsyuk, Giroux, Toews

-I'm not bumping Sid until I see him regress while healthy
-Yes I know G just out played my #1 and #2
-Stamkos and the Sedins are 6-8

Top 10 "if you were to start a franchise around 1 player...":
Crosby, Lundqvist, Chara, Datsyuk, Giroux, Malkin, Toews, Weber, Quick, Stamkos

At 33 and with his production dropping off, Datsyuk needs to start moving down on everyone's list.

Other than that, a very good list.

That's the thing about Datsyuk though, it's about more than just the points. He's incredible defensively and one of the hardest players to stop. He was still almost PPG this season.

as an outsider watching the series I was floored by giroux's performance. Been a huge fan of his since the PO's two years ago and he followed up a great season with probably the best series performance I've seen in the 5 years I've watched hockey. Absolute monster in every facet of the game and that first shift today was insane.

If the hawks go out I'll be donning a flyers avvy the rest of the way.

I hope Giroux IS statistically in the top 5 overall, if for no other reason than he can brag to Steve Ott next time in Dallas.

I'd put him right up there in the top 6.

Crosby
Malkin
Stamkos
Toews
Datsyuk
Giroux

Right now, at this point in time, Claude Giroux is the best player in the world. And by a longshot.
